Ophelia's Teeth...

A few days ago, the news here mentioned a little-known Tropical Storm, called Ophelia, that was tracking its way eastwards across the warm Atlantic towards a spot between the Azores and the Canary Islands. A hurricane, heading towards Ireland? Never since meteorological records began in this part of the world, some 200 years ago, have we heard of such a thing! On Sunday evening, this now-downgraded ex-hurricane Ophelia, called Ex-Ophelia in many news broadcasts (Mr. Spock rather sexily raised a Vulcan eyebrow at that one!), tracked inexorably towards the south-western coast of Ireland. Late Sunday night, the Irish Meteorological authority, Met Éireann, announced a Red status for strong winds in excess of 65mph (105kph) for several of the south-westerly counties of Ireland - hospital admissions were put on-hold, schools closed and court appearances postponed in those counties. Early Monday morning, the Red status had been extended to cover all remaining counties in Ireland, and shortly thereafter, the Northern Ireland authorities announced closure of schools and tertiary education establishments in the 6 remaining counties - the entire island of Ireland was on varying degrees of lockdown. Now, 12 hours later, after returning home at noon so I was not stuck away from home by the possible closure of the longest bridge in Ireland (and one that I cross twice daily to and from work!) due to high winds... I sit here, listening to the wind howling around the house, whistling over the chimney and generally battering the hedges and trees and bushes in the garden, and I wonder: at what point will the lights go out? The epicentre of the storm is now passing to the north-west of the most northerly county in Ireland, Donegal, on its way across the Atlantic towards Scotland. The anti-clockwise rotation of the storm is also making its effects felt in the Irish Sea, between Ireland and the larger island of the UK, Great Britain - the main sea-coast roads in the eastern counties of Down and Antrim have been closed to prevent storm surges washing vehicles into the sea. Even Wales, to the south and east of Ireland, is feeling the effects of these gusts, as they burst over 85mph, 140kph, and threaten to batter the Welsh coastline. Over 18,000 homes are without electricity tonight in the 6 counties of Northern Ireland, and the 26 counties that constitute the Republic of Ireland have more than 20 times that number affected, along with three people, in separate incidents, killed as a result of falling or fallen trees. It's only a matter of time, now that the authorities in Northern Ireland have stated that schools and colleges of further and higher education are also to be closed on Tuesday, 17-October 2017. The crocodile has bared its teeth - let us hope everyone stays home tonight, safe and protected from Ophelia's snap!
All the latest news as the British Isles prepares for the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia.

Bad things have happened in Malta, too. Yet, they're man-made. A blogger who wrote about dishonest politicians was killed by a car bomb.

Yes, thank you @Maluse - I caught mention of that, just a couple of lines, on the UK 6-o'clock national news program on BBC Radio 4 earlier.

I gather that the storm wasn't as bad as predicted? That's a fabulous photo - did someone draw that in the muck on the vehicle?

@arthurchappell Trampolines, wheelie bins and the odd tree were the main agents of destruction employed by Ophelia up here.

I think that by now the worst is over. I have read that many were without power and the strong winds have caused serious fires in Portugal and Spain, killing 39 perople.

Today has been a fine, if cooler day. The schools were still closed today, so many people's schedules have been disrupted.

@xFiacre I had to go look that up, just to be sure of my flots and my jets, Sam! Not quite under water here yet, for a change!
Flotsam and jetsam are terms that describe two types of marine debris associated with vessels. Flotsam is defined as debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck or accident. Jetsam describes debris tha

I was thinking about you when I heard where the storm was headed. I hope you weathered the storm well and that there was no damage to your home. How's things look there in the aftermath of the storm?

It battered parts of the south west, and the east coast, more than it did us up here in the north-west of Ireland. I guess it could as easily have tracked inland, rather than around the coast like it did. Storms like that are rare in these parts, and hurricanes, well, never this far north, as I understand it.

@pgntwo So it sounds like you are okay then! That's good to hear. I was wondering if the buildings and houses and structures of Ireland and the UK were built to withstand such high winds.

We felt the effects of this storm in London. The sky turned red with sand from the Sahara apparently whipped up by this storm. It was like night time. I had to go out to investigate why it was so dark it was quite bizarre. I am glad you stayed safe., I hope that things are back to normal now!

We have a bit of wind in the Eastern angles. It brought Saharan dust and Portuguese fire debris with it; the world went a bizarre colour, briefly, and it looked like the end of the world was upon us. Then it cleared up.

Some years ago red sand from the Sahara made it across the Alps into the South of Germany. Quite impressive. The end of the world was not discussed then if I remember correctly.

We had a blustery day yesterday. Nothing like you are experiencing but still bothersome. Trees list limbs and we lost electricity for 2.5 hours...what a good excuse to barbecue for supper. Now we can pick up the bushels of walnuts that bombarded our roof.
