Time to Care for Me!

Monday night's class covered the importance of caring for yourself. Often times we ignore the signs that we are stressed. We forget to do things for ourselves. Sadly, I am one that doesn't do anything for me. I am one that cares for others and neglects my own needs. I do not watch movies, read books, go spend time with friends and rarely spend time with family. The class left me feeling a bit depressed. I am determined to focus more on me. I need to do this for my health and well being. I am going to spend time with my sister this weekend. Saturday we are going to a Fall festival and craft fair at one of the local schools. That afternoon we are also going to celebrate our great-nieces birthday. Will be good to see my family. Next weekend I hope to go to Maine to see my sister and her spouse. Maybe I'll get to walk the beach too! Beach therapy is the best. What do you do to take care of you?

Most of the time I care only for the others. I know that I am stressed right now, I need more rest, I need more time for me. As soon as my husband feels well, I hope to have more time for me.

We were told that it is important to take a few minutes each day and do something just for us. Even if it is reading a few pages in a book. Sleep deprivation is definitely a biggie for me. My body is starting to feel the effects of lack of sleep and no exercise.

@ElusiveButterfly I do not sleep well either, I feel tired during the day. I read every night before turning off the light and sleep.

I need to engage in "usual" things more often. I have been neglecting myself for a long time. I didn't realize it until Monday.

@RubyHawk I no longer socialize as I once did with family and friends. I don't do anything but please others. I have forgotten that I am important to.

I sometimes feel like I am imposing on family and friends if I were to drop in. They tell me I should come by, but, I don't.

@marguicha it definitely makes her Life's a lot easier to deal with than we have someone to love and have them around.

I always took a couple of hours on Saturdays for myself even when my kids still lived with us. Mani/pedi, bubble baths, etc. I felt pretty for my husband and refreshed for my kids. Now, I'm high maintenance as I've gotten older. LOL!

I really need some me time. At that meeting it was as if my eyes opened wide and I saw that I wasn't caring for myself. It is high time it happened.

We all need to spend me time. I can see how not doing so would depress you and stress you out. I'm glad you're getting away today with your sister, and will go to Maine next week and walk a beach. There is nothing like a beach to settle all your thoughts and get things back in focus. As for me - I only have me time, living alone. Though I also need to get away, spend time with people. That has become my me time. Walking away from the computer, spending time at the Y, swimming, and interacting with friends. Going to Writer's Guild the first Tuesday of the month, interacting, learning, keeping my mind active and alive. I'm hoping to get away from here in the next couple weeks. I've wanted to take a trip up to Door County, and asked my friend if she would like to also. She wants to go, and is looking at her calendar to find a time to go. It will be fun. I could go alone, but I want to be with people. That is my new me time - being social.

Whenever you get the chance to share an experience with a family member or good friend it brings more memories. I do hope to get to the beach next weekend. My fear is that it won't happen though. I have to get a muffler for my car. Don't want to drive that distance and chance it getting worse.

@just4him my husband has said he may be able to install a pipe to fix it until we have the money for the entire unit. It is hunting season, that is more important.

@ElusiveButterfly I agree, that would not be good. I've had a muffler fall off while driving and was happy my older son, the mechanic, was with me, and was able to fix it enough to get us where we were going, and then was able to fix it much better.

My time is filled with doing things for others. Told my husband it would be nice if he would make dinner some night. That went over like a lead balloon.

I read, watch TV, listen to music, and play the Sims as a form of stress relief (and to keep myself distracted to prevent having panic attacks.)

I tried playing Sims years ago but it just kind of got a little bit more in for me.

Yes, get away and rock!! How do I take care of me? Thinking.... I listen to one of the cat person's purr. I write poetry when it sneaks in and bites me.

I am not very poetic. It has never bitten me like others have been bitten. Sometimes I am envious of those who can write beautiful poetry. There are times when I can't even read it because I cannot hear the meaning behind the words.

That seems to be a common problem with caregivers. I came to the conclusion last night.....I have no friends. (Don't misunderstand). My life has revolved around caring for my children, my job, caring for my mothier inlaw, my mother and my father. In between a troubled church history, a couple of moves and no, I have no girlfriends I would call up and say....how about we go to watch a movie. It's not them, it's me....I've not invested any time into friendship.....I've been to busy caring for others.

Mostly I can decide what I want to do with my time so I guess that's pretty much taking care of me. I do appreciate my good fortune.

I think that the trip to Maine will be the answer to doing something for yourself. Unfortunately I don't stop to do for me until I am forced to by health and then it ends up as a bed rest thing.
