In just 10 minutes

I am over at my dad's house and I'm dog sitting. It is always an interesting adventure when I dog sit. We all know this! This morning it starting out easy with just letting the dogs outside cleaning up messes, and filling up the dog food bowls. Actually, it wasn't that easy, I had to open up one of the cans and...that wasn't easy because my dad's can opener is just weird and my can opener I have is just really difficult. But, I managed so it wasn't that bad. Then after letting all the dogs in was when chaos happened. One of the dogs gets canned dog food plus a cup of kibble because he doesn't have that many teeth left and needs softer food. But since it is had the soft food in the bowl the other dogs like to go after it. I can't close the gate because they have to get out of the hallway where the door is to make it to their bowls. So I have to shoo them off. In the midst of that, the tiniest dog starts to get into a fight with the biggest dog so I have to break that off. Then the dog who has been having seizures is trying to eat out of the dog food bowl that had the soft food. And she gets angry when the dog tries to go after his food bowl and I tried to softly move her out so she didn't freak out. She moves and I close the gate so the big dogs do not get out. This dog starts to sneeze and it spooks another dog that isn't all the way there in her head and she attacks. The two get into a little bit of the fight. This excites the dog way to much and she goes into a seizure. I am freaking out because I am in the gate and I cannot unlock it. I finally manage to get out and I go to the ground (which isn't easy with my knees) and I clear the way and wait until she comes to. Within a few seconds she does. I pet her until she gets up and walks. then I have to go back to the big dogs because one likes to steal the other dog's food. The biggest dog ended up eating his food too fast and vomits and the other one is so skiddish with what all was happening he is also blind and cannot find his dog food bowl again and panics but I lead him to it. Finally they both calm down and eat and I go out and wash my hands and fine the dog that has seizures and she is still a little disoriented. I have never had to handle a dog going through a seizure before, it was such a scary sight to see. I just want to get some breakfast myself and take a small nap if I can.

Wow, that's surely a complex situation to manage. No wonder the owners want to flee away as often as they can and let you take care of the dogs. But they also have their own responsibilities they shouldn't escape from.

@DesirousDreamer I understand that, it's better to have good memories about her. The seizure is not one happy memory, I bet, but it could have been worse.

It was...ruff. Yeah, I shouldn't be the one that has to take care of a sick dog. But if they don't show her love, I will. I just hope I don't lose her while I am here.

@sabtraversa It was not a good sight, but at least I knew I could take care of it and knew what to do. It wasn't good but it was a lesson learned.

That's a lot of dogs with a lot of different challenges. How did your father get to have so many dogs?

4 are the pups from the the dog that had the seizure, she had 2 litters and they kept 4, 1 was by choice and the others were just not taken by people. And the other 2 one is the son of the eldest dog there.

I think you're lucky to make it out alive! That many dogs act like a pack so could have turned on you and ate you for breakfast. If I had been in your shoes I'd have let the dog die, then you'd only have 6 to deal with next time. However, for me there wouldn't be a next time. Tell him to get some tropical fish.

@DesirousDreamer Am I in the doghouse?

5 of them are chihuahuas so I think I am fine. Plus they love me because I spoil them. I would not have left that dog die, I grew up with her. It isn't my place to bury her since I am not her owner. that is a sick and effed up thing to say and I don't appreciate that. Dogs are family. I don't like her suffering, but I wouldn't have just let her die because she is family.

@Orson_Kart Would you let a small child die? Probably not. You would do everything you could to save that child. At least, a decent human being would, anyway.

WOW sure glad you got through all of that. It would have got me into a panic myself and of course I know you have to consider the dogs first. Hope the rest of your day goes well.

My goodness! I've been through similar routines with sheep and horses so I have some idea of how tricky it all was. Thank goodness I never had to cope with a seizure.

It is not easy, I have seen a human seizure and honestly, that was easier to deal with than a dog, even as tiny as she is.

Wow! That was some 10 minutes! How many dogs does he have? May I ask what is wrong with your knees?
• Peoria, Arizona
21 Oct 17
It really was. He has 7 dogs. My left knee has dislocated several times, I have had surgery on it but last year I re-injured it after falling down stairs. And my right knee is just really weak because of having to carry my weight when dealing with my left knee.
