Sisal Soap Bag - The Ideal Small Present and Stocking Filler

There comes a day when a bar of soap is too small for use. What do you do with the remains? Throw them away? Have you ever thought, "Pity, if only I could find a way to go on consuming it until the very end?" Sisal bags keep the small remains of soap together and have the extra advantage of removing dead skin cells, exfoliating, massaging the skin and improving blood circulation. Of course, you don't have to put in remains at all, you can also put in a brand new bar of soap to get this treatment. The bag I bought on Amazon is 10cm X 10cm in width and height and looks as if it's knit by hand. A string runs through the hem at the upper end of the bag. Its two ends come out of a hole, go through a thick wooden bead and then end in a knot. The idea is obviously to put in the soap and then pull the bead to one side so that the upper part closes. This idea is bad and not thought through or not tested in practise. The sisal material is coarse and can't be pulled together so that only a small opening remains. The opening is always so big that small pieces of soap fall out. I took a pair of scissors and cut an opening into the hem opposite the bead. There I pulled the string out and then made a knot with the string ends from both sides. Now it's not perfect, but much better. I'm considering getting a patent for this solution. I found this piece of information on the net: Sisal is a natural sea grass, and therefore it is bio-degradable. The first part of the sentence is wrong, the second is correct. Sisal  is an agave that yields a stiff fibre traditionally used in making twine and rope. It's not clear where the plant originates from. Many people think it comes from Yucatan in Mexico which is understandable as there are enormous sisal plantations. I've been there, I've seen them. Sisal soap bags are sold on British and American Amazon. I’m showing a specimen here from the German site in order not to be accused of advertising a special product. No myLot member will go there and buy it. The postage would be too high. It only serves to show you what it looks like. The bags vary in the thickness and coarseness of the fibre. I’m not mentioning prices here. There are several bags on offer, they’re all cheap. They cry out to be bought not as single items. The postage would be more expensive than the product. I'm sure you can find them in offline shops, too, but not living in GB or the USA or any other country where myLot members live I can’t direct you to a shop. Whatever, buy several, one for yourself and some more as stocking fillers or as gift packs for birthdays, anniversaries or small presents when you're invited. Put a good bar of soap in. I can guarantee you that nobody will bring a more original present!

Sounds like a fun present! Interesting that they got the info partially wrong. I do tend to throw out my bars of soap when they get real small and don't yield much in the way of suds.

Hey Sweetpea, long time no see. Hope you are well and happy! I've used similar bags myself. There have been times when I've saved quite a few small pieces of soap then put them in sightly larger bags (or stockings). Tie it up and hang it outside near the water faucet. Quick and easy cleanup after a day in the yard.

I remember the username but am a bit puzzled about being addressed as 'Sweetpea'. Are you sure you're talking to me? :-) Where's your avatar? Don't you want to use it anymore? Of course, you can save the small pieces of soap like you've described. A piece of gauze would do, too. But you wouldn't have a nice present then, would you?

@Namelesss Of course, I remember you from bubblews! If I remember correctly, you had a black and white avatar.

I have sisal bags, some of the leftover soap bars go there, but I have so many, that I boil the leftover with a bit of water, I add some liquid soap and I recreate new bars.

@MALUSE I use silicon molds, those used to make cakes. I keep one only for the soaps.

Where do you put the soft stuff in so that it can harden and get the shape of a bar of soap?

This is something I could use, I do not like just throwing soap out. I do not shop online but will see if I can find it in a store here @MALUSE .

That does sound like a good idea for people who use bar soap (like my wife) instead of liquid.

I tried liquid soap once but didn't buy it a second time. I prefer bar soap. So, now you have a stocking filler for your wife! Maybe you want to have a look. I don't earn anything when you buy such a bag!

Nice idea. I read of one where the were talking of mashing the soap to powder and using it as powder soap.

I've made something similar but just using a washcloth (flannel) folding it in half to make a bag and putting drawstring round the top.

@MALUSE I appreciate the information! Thanks! The problem with Amazon is that they charge way too much for shipping and so I will try first locate locally. Also, our dollar at this time is only worth about 78 cents compared to the US. At one time our dollar was worth more than the US and nobody wanted it. Things have changed.

@1hopefulman I didn't send you the link of the American site but the one of the Canadian site. So the price should be in Canadian dollars. I wouldn't order one sisal bag, either, but several so that the postage is bearable.

Pretty idea for gifts. When I have a lot of the slivers of soap bars I put them into an old nylon stocking and I use it outside to wash my hands when I am playing in the garden dirt. I hate to waste.

I also know the stocking solution. My mother did that. The sisal bag is better, though, because it works a bit like a massage glove.

@andriaperry And, as I've written, a nice present with a bar of good soap in it. You wouldn't give someone an old stocking with a bar of good soap in it, would you?

Wow. Thanks for this information. I didn't know about this that we can still use the remaining soap that we have by putting it inside that small bag. Interesting.
