To be or not to be

As mentioned in my last discussion, I have been going through a box of assorted birthday, anniversary, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and miscellaneous cards. I am finding it difficult to throw these out and I’m now thinking I’ll keep maybe five of each. Anything has to be better than throwing them all out.
I came across this one and thought the caption too cute not to share. As you can see it says:
‘Said Hamlet to Ophelia,
I’ll do a sketch of thee.
What kind of pencil shall I use
2B or not 2B?’
This is one of Spike Milligan’s little gems. I love clever, witty sayings like this and of course, Spike was a master of the art.
Milligan has an Australian connection as his parents and younger brother moved to Woy Woy in New South Wales just north of Sydney. He became a regular visitor and in the 1960s labelled Woy Woy as the ‘largest above ground cemetery in the world’. Despite this, there is a meeting room in the Woy Woy Public Library and a bridge named after him.
Milligan died from kidney failure on 27 February 2002 at his home in Rye, Sussex. Eventually his tombstone would include his preferred epitaph “I told you I was ill”. Do you have a favourite quote from this wonderful entertainer?

I had to laugh at the cleverness of the saying on the card. He sounds like a interesting person to get to know better.

@JudyEv I guess I should look him up, unless you will do more posts on him.

@1hopefulman I doubt I would unless something turns up that involves him.

I rarely remember who is being quoted, I'm throwing away almost all the cards. Going through my parents card was heart wrenching and I wish I had just thrown them away without reading any of them...Platespinner will concur.

I can imagine how emotional it must have been. I have a sealed cardboard box and I know it contains cards from when we married and from when our first son was born. I really don't want to go there. Perhaps it would be less traumatic for our sons to have to chuck them. At least they would know very few of the donors.

@JudyEv yes, and maybe the deceased wanted to make the mourners laugh and be amused with the tombstones funny statements.

I have seen Spike Milligan in a few movies. I think he was one of the Goons. Woy Woy? Really?

@Letranknight2015 I'm not either but many Westerners have heard just the line 'to be or not to be'.

@1creekgirl I can only guess that it was too flippant - not suitably serious.

I said in a couple of comments that he might be an acquired taste and I know what you're saying about him being hard to understand. I could never understand just the speech in the Goon shows.

Spike was a crazy genius.
He wrote a lot of poetry and I particularly like Have a Nice Day.
Just my kind of humour.

Can't think of a favorite quote right now, but what he used was a good one, wasn't it?

Very clever. I have a book of his somewhere but can't remember now if it is quotes or limericks.

That's a well-known quote isn't it? It seems Milligan isn't well known in America.

I never knew of Spike Milligan -- but that card is hilarious. I wouldn't feel bad about keeping cards. :-) Maybe they could be glued into a scrap book or something

I have a small cardboard box full and I'm trying to declutter. Most I'm throwing out. I will just keep a representative few.
