To be or not to be

As mentioned in my last discussion, I have been going through a box of assorted birthday, anniversary, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and miscellaneous cards. I am finding it difficult to throw these out and I’m now thinking I’ll keep maybe five of each. Anything has to be better than throwing them all out. I came across this one and thought the caption too cute not to share. As you can see it says: ‘Said Hamlet to Ophelia, I’ll do a sketch of thee. What kind of pencil shall I use 2B or not 2B?’ This is one of Spike Milligan’s little gems. I love clever, witty sayings like this and of course, Spike was a master of the art. Milligan has an Australian connection as his parents and younger brother moved to Woy Woy in New South Wales just north of Sydney. He became a regular visitor and in the 1960s labelled Woy Woy as the ‘largest above ground cemetery in the world’. Despite this, there is a meeting room in the Woy Woy Public Library and a bridge named after him. Milligan died from kidney failure on 27 February 2002 at his home in Rye, Sussex. Eventually his tombstone would include his preferred epitaph “I told you I was ill”. Do you have a favourite quote from this wonderful entertainer?

I know very little of Spike Milligan, but now I am going to search to see what I can find.

I think he was an acquired taste. I'm not sure everyone found him funny but he was certainly very talented.

It can be hard to throw away some items. I might just box them all up again!

@JudyEv That or consider making a little scrap book or a collage for the wall!

I had to laugh at the cleverness of the saying on the card. He sounds like a interesting person to get to know better.

I rarely remember who is being quoted, I'm throwing away almost all the cards. Going through my parents card was heart wrenching and I wish I had just thrown them away without reading any of them...Platespinner will concur.

I can imagine how emotional it must have been. I have a sealed cardboard box and I know it contains cards from when we married and from when our first son was born. I really don't want to go there. Perhaps it would be less traumatic for our sons to have to chuck them. At least they would know very few of the donors.

It's a funny thing to have on a tombstone isn't it?

@JudyEv yes, and maybe the deceased wanted to make the mourners laugh and be amused with the tombstones funny statements.

I have seen Spike Milligan in a few movies. I think he was one of the Goons. Woy Woy? Really?

'To be or not to be' is a famous line from Shakespeare's play, Hamlet. I use pencil in my address book so I can rub out addresses that change.

I could never understand the goon show. The accents were too weird or something.

@1creekgirl I can only guess that it was too flippant - not suitably serious.

Actually I think the epitaph might be in Irish as the English version wasn't allowed.

I've read a lot by Spike Milligan. At times he's difficult to understand for foreigners. The poem you've quoted here is indeed a little gem.

@JudyEv But at least English is your native language! If Milligan is difficult to understand for you, think of the people coming from other languages.

@MALUSE Exactly - and that's I've said to several that he is an acquired taste.

I said in a couple of comments that he might be an acquired taste and I know what you're saying about him being hard to understand. I could never understand just the speech in the Goon shows.

I am really surprised that he doesn't seem to be known at all in America. He isn't to everyone's likely but he was very witty.

Sorry, I do not. I have not heard of him before. I think it is a good idea to keep at least some of the cards. What did you do with them Judy?

If I do keep any, it will be left to our sons to decide what to do with them. They will have to toss them out as they will have no meaning for them.

I have a small cardboard box full and I'm trying to declutter. Most I'm throwing out. I will just keep a representative few.
