Favorite Australian Bands #4 - Midnight Oil

Yes, I definitely accept ideas and suggestions for musical countdowns. In this case, @JudyEv suggested a series of bands from Australia. We have reached #4: Midnight Oil. Fronted by vocalist and political activist Peter Garrett, Midnight Oil formed in Sydney in 1976, as Farm, before becoming Midnight Oil (the name was drawn from a hat) that same year. The band is definitely a message band, with songs about subjects such as the environment, nuclear weapons, and treatment of Aborigines. Garrett, a lawyer, also has served as the Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth (three years,) and another three years as Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage of the Arts, and as a member of the Australian Parliament for Kingsford Smith. The band has won 11 Australian Recording Industry Association Awards, and is in that association's Hall of Fame. I've linked to the official video for their best known song, "Beds are Burning," a protest tune about giving land back to the Tinputi people. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I am shocked that they only made #4! The extended long play remix of Beds are Burning is great. How many rock bands used a didgeridoo?

@JohnRoberts fair point but make sense considering how enamored he was and the band was with aboriginals and their culture. Freaking love these guys.

We had a neighbor that played a diggeridoo. She is a multi-instrumentalist.

I can see that. They really didn't have a lot of hits over here.

@NJChicaa - The radio station I worked at in the 80's for played this all the time. And we were an Adult Contemporary format. It didn't really fit, yet it worked.

Favorite song from that group. From Diesel and Dust ranked the #1 Australian album of all time.

So shocked (not). It may be their "big hit" here, but it's a dang good song.

The last three aren't going to shock you either. Very predictable.
