One of the fun things about homeschooling is that we don't have to stick, strictly, to text books. Every month we, also, do seasonal unit studies. For the month of November, several years ago, we did little known fun facts about the holiday. Here they are: 1. Turkey was not served at the first thanksgiving. Their meat was fish, deer, and duck. 2. Although Abraham Lincoln is the president who established Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1863, it was not his idea. He was convinced by Sara Hale, author of "Mary Had A Little Lamb". 3. The first t.v. dinners were made from turkey by Swanson. In 1953, they had over 200 lbs of extra turkey, so a salesman suggested small trays coupled with a side dish. 4. Every year the president pardons a turkey from being eaten. 5. Wild turkeys can run up to 25 miles an hour. 6. The Pilgrims did not wear buckled hats. Buckles were non-existent in the Plymouth colony at this time. 7. Thomas Jefferson thought Thanksgiving was a ridiculous idea. 8. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was the first to feature live animals (lions, camels, elephants). 9. The first Thanksgiving meal took 3 days to eat. 10. The night before thanksgiving is the biggest day for bar sales in America. Who knows some other Thanksgiving facts? Share them, lets see how many we can get.

It is believed that the first Thanksgiving in 1621 was attended by more Wampanoag Indians than Pilgrims.

Oh..Very interesting to read. I do not understand the point 10. Why will there be more bar sales on the night before Thanksgiving day?

I wondered that too. It surprised me. From what I have read, 1. it is because people will be spending all day Thursday entertaining, so they take the night before to go to bars and kick back and relax. 2. College kids are coming home for the holidays and the night before Thanksgiving is the big night to get together with old friends (usually at a bar). 3. Bars host lots of October/autumn themed parties the night before Thanksgiving (Okoberfest, revolutionary times, and football ).
