“Sexcrime (Nineteen-eighty-four)” served as soundtrack album for the movie adapted from George Orwell’s classic novel but the title song was not used in the film. It was heard in the movie trailer and the video contained movie scenes. The song was a big hit in the UK (#4), Europe, Canada and Australia but a failure in the US dying at #81. For some reason, “Sexcrime” was deemed controversial and shunned by mainstream radio and MTV did not like the video. The song received plenty of airplay on LA’s alternative radio station KROQ. Maybe the title was too provocative. There is nothing salacious about the simple and sad lyrics. The sound of “Sexcrime” is striking being very electronic. There is the Annie Lennox stuttering effect and Dave Stewart saying “1984” through a vocal box on the album track.
