Can You Still Squat?

This will be so easy for younger or lean people, but for older, bulky person like me, it is a challenge!
Squatting is sitting very low on the floor, with your knees bent to the fullest and your buttock on the floor. I read it has great benefits in keeping the joints flexible and to have more synovial fluid to make it supple.
So those people I see in rural areas sitting on the ground while having conversations or just resting are fortunate enough to have more flexible and strong legs and hip joints.
Since I read about it, I try to do it again using a chair or the edge of the bed for support. Just little by little till the knee joints can tolerate the pain and make it strong again!
Can you still squat? Try it.

That's very nice! It has great health benefits than sitting on a chair or comfy furnitures all the time.

@acelawrites it’s part of my job so I don’t get to sit a lot.

I am young, but I have hardly ever been able to squat without holding onto something. I have really bad knees haha I'm also a bigger girl, so it is better for me to just not squat unless I have to. haha

It is indeed a big challenge for us with bigger body built; but trying to do it day by day; then later we can do it with ease.

@DesirousDreamer it is alright not to do it because of your injury. But stretching a little is good.

@acelawrites I have a bad knee so I don't want to chance that. I squatted a few days ago and I thought my knee cap was going to dislocate...yeah no thank you.

You can hold on to a sturdy chair or anything to support you up.

It is good to know you can still squat even for short periods; that's nice. Getting up is not so much of a problem for me.

Since I exercise on a daily basis, squatting is not a problem. I think it's advisable for you to take it slow although I would suggest trying other flexibility exercises that don't put too much weight on the knee. Squatting improperly done can also injure one's lower back.

I had been walking for 30 minutes daily plus biking; then squatting is my next aim.

@acelawrites _Walking is the best exercise. It is a natural activity of the body.

@acelawrites @aureliah This is what I can do. I can bent my knees all the way down but my buttock is inches from touching the floor and I can get up and down with no problem.
I tried sitting on the floor with my legs crossed but I cannot get back up without using my hands.

Yes I do it almost every day since I have to sit on the floor in different positions while doing yoga. Even otherwise I have a mat in the living room with a few cushions and find it very relaxing to sit on the floor while reading or watching TV

I think as you get older what is referred to as a modified squat is a better fit. We do what we can a hover at exercise, you lower your butt close to a straight chair but don't sit then go back up, it helps strengthen your legs.

Flexing knees to stretch the joints is good, just like what you mentioned by lowering your butt close to a chair.
