I Did Not Know A Fly Could Bite!

Here in South Africa, a fly is the normal annoyance, it buzzes around, with that annoying sound it emits!  Pesky very pesky. And today there was a fly, buzzing around annoying me and this reminded me of something that happened a couple of years back. Imagine my surprise (and an awful surprise it was) when I discovered that a fly can bite! A couple of years back, I was visiting family in Portugal and we were sitting outside one summer afternoon, when a fly was buzzing around us, it landed on my leg and bit me! I couldn't believe it when I felt that odd stinging sensation and realised a fly had actually bitten me! That was the day I learned to wield a fly swatter bar none! What about your part of the world? Do you have to deal with the normal pesky fly during summer or do you have those that bite? I was happy to return home after that vacation and only have to deal with the pesky ones! Any insect can bite, but most don't. I've been bitten by the occasional housefly, many times by horseflies and deer flies

How does one know the difference between a fly and a horsefy or deer fly? Do they look like anything that has noticeable differences? Honestly, one fly is the same as the others to me. I don't get very many in the house and aren't outside long enough to see them often

@Marty1 Horseflies are a LOT bigger, deer flies are a different color and you normally only find them outside

We call them horseflys. They hurt so much it’s similar to a light bee sting. I swell up really bad and itch for days after being bitten. We had a yard sale this summer and the flies bit my legs up so bad! The following day I had to wear pants and have a fly squatter near me.

@bluesa my dad always got bit by them while swimming in the pool. Our dogs growing up always got bit up by them terrible. After being bitten and the swelling and itchyness I feel so bad for how the dogs must have felt. They lived outside.

Those nasty horseflies we have here at a certain point in the summer are viscous!!! My husband and I were on a spa vacation and in the pool when they last bit us both. Those bites not only hurt, but left nasty welts and itches.

As far as I know the biting and leaving behind their venom, poisonous, irritating or not dangerous but annoying is their defense mechanism so I almost always have my herbal remedies kept handy ! Did the bite swell or turn red ?

I didn't have herbal remedies because I hadn't expected to get bitten, but I had antiseptic cream that I put on back then.

We don't have flies that bite here but they do carry germs and so we need to be careful with all flies.
Flies' disease-carrying potential may be greater than previously thought, say US researchers.

Don't forget about that little fly outside the cities that like to get a piece of you to take home for dinner. Is it possible to have a pet housefly that is clean?

@Bluedoll Yes, I did encounter of of those deer flies many years ago way up north of where I live and it did take a little chunk of me. When a housefly enters my apartment, I usually try to chase it out. I have never considered it as a pet.

@bluesa It happens every now and then, by some nasty flies only. The problem is, we can't tell which one is going to do the nasty tricks. Wish we could read their facial expressions or at least, look straight into their evil eyes ...

Flies definitely can bite. When I am on the beach and there is a west wind it attracts many flies. It is like an invasion. And they can draw blood, ouch!
