I think the laptop crashed

Yesterday we had a sweet 16 party to go to followed by shopping so we were out late and stayed up until midnight. We all slept in to 9am this morning. My son started the school provided laptop and it froze and made a quiet squeeling kind of noise. Ctrl+alt+delete didn’t do anything so I held in the power button and it shut off. Once it restarted it shows this screen saying it is unable to boot up and to insert to boot disc. The school sent us this last year already set up there was no disc. I called tech support but they aren’t open until noon. He has had three weeks to finish this project in power point that is due tomorrow so even if our computer crashed she won’t except that as an excuse although I did email her so she is aware. He can use my desktop but we will have to download all the programs and start from scratch and get it done by tonight. My daughter is having her cousin over to work on a project for school today as well. Enjoying my coffee now before things get crazy.

Once I download power point I am hoping I can find the websites we got the information from. I wrote the information down but I have to find the links to the resources as well as find all the photos again. Thank god I have a desktop computer to use until the laptop is fixed.

The inability for the computer to find a boot device suggests that the location of the boot folder is unknown. This information is usually stored in BIOS and should not be lost. If the motherboard battery fails it would happen, but that is rare. If you can borrow a Windows disk you could try repairing the MBR.

@shaggin Even if the operating system cannot be reached, the data such as text and pictures should still be available.

@Asylum I’m not sure if they will want us to send it back to be repaired and then return it. That would be good if so when we wouldn’t lose all the things we had on there. It’s all school related so it’s not my personal computer thankfully.

Hate when that happens. Mine also stopped working due to heating problems.

It did seem warm the other day but I assumed it was just always that way and I never noticed.

It looks like there is a serious Hard Disk problem, the disk is no more bootable. With the original CD I am sure it can be recovered.

@LadyDuck Today we have to do cyber school in my computer room on my desktop computer. My parrot is being so obnoxiously loud it is terrible. I cannot wait until the new laptop comes.

Unfortunately the school did not send us the cd along with the computer. They had to try a few things to get it to start up but it wouldn’t so they are sending us another one in about 6 Days.

@shaggin Without the original CD there is not a lot you can do and not always you can recover, even with the original CD.

Hmmm... did you try checking the school's website? Most, if not all, of the schools in our area show a link that leads to the online restoration site for the pc's given by the school and used by the students. (I helped one of my nephews when the school provided pc crashed on him. I just plugged a flashdrive into my pc and downloaded the programming for him. It was a simple matter to plug it into the pc the school supplied and allowed it to set itself up again. They even supplied the .exe file that set it up without us doing anything else.) I hope everything worked out for you, Shaggin!

Wow well that sure would have been easier. I called tech support and she had me try pushing f10 and f3 but whatever was supposed to happen did not work so they are sending him another one on a few more business days. He is using my desktop computer for now which is a pain in the neck so hopefully the new laptop comes sooner rather then later.

@DaddyEvil I downloaded a few programs so he could do his work but there are so many and I don't want to clutter up my computer so he will have to catch up on the other work when the laptop arrives

@shaggin Oh, removing the programs after the laptop is replaced would be little or no problem. But him taking over your desktop for the time it takes to get the laptop replaced would be a problem! If you lived closer, I could simply loan him one of our pc's. I have two that I use and Pretty has 7 that she uses. We could always combine what I do on my second pc with what Pretty does on one of hers to free up my spare for that long, no problem. I'm wishing him a speedy delivery and a quick catch-up once it does arrive! You have my sympathy in the meantime.

Oh, that reminds me of my laptop's condition before. Mines like that too, but that was a year ago. It got fixed by my ICT instructor. He removed some sort of disc inside my laptop and replaced it with a new one, I forgot what it's called though...

I wish they had sent me a disc when they sent us the computer just in case this happened. Now we have to wait 6 days for another one to come and install a bunch of programs on my personal computer. I’m on the phone with tech support right now and Time is ticking away to get this project done.

I hate it when something like that happens to my computer. I have never had any problems since I switched to Mac, that's why I'll never go back to any windows computer.

I have only ever had Windows ones. Are the MAC ones more expensive? We are doing cyber school on my desktop today and its awful because the parrot keeps yelling and its distracting. It's so loud it hurts my ears.

Must be something wrong with the Operating system you can have your files save on another computer or on the External Hard drive.

It is just a school provided computer so we didn't lose out on much. They will be sending us another one in a few more business days. Until then he is doing his cyber school on my personal desktop computer.

It couldn't be fixed by anything they had me do over the phone. They are sending us a new one within 6 business days. Today he used my personal desktop computer to do cyber school today. The parrot kept screaching and the puppy wouldn't stay in my lap so I couldn't stay in the room with him while he was doing his live classes. My daughter is using the computer now that she is home from school. Hard to finish my sons work when we only have the one computer to use. He and I will have to try to catch up over the weekend.

I had to wait until after 12 to talk to tech support and had to wait for an agent which was a very long. They had me try a few things and could not get it working again so they are sending another in about 6 days. We got the project done but after installing programs, finding the websites info and photos it took until about 6 pm to finish. Glad thats over!

Oh dear, certainly sounds like things might get a little crazy. I hope not but it's not sounding good. Now I'm 'old' I try to get things well ahead of when they're needed as glitches like you're encountering are always on the cards.

Yes it is definitely my fault for not getting it done as soon as it was assigned instead of waiting until th me day before it was due. I managed to get it finished but it took my entire day and was more work for me then I would have liked since it was his project but it wouldn’t have gotten done if I didn’t help out more then usual.

@shaggin At least it is done now. Sometimes you just need to provide a bit extra. The circumstances weren't really 'normal' were they?

This is a Windows 7 and worked great. This was very sudden and unexpected. Thankfully it was a school provided computer so they will be sending my son another within a few more business days.
