A Horse Bit Me! (Animal Story 10)

Some years ago I persuaded my husband to spend our summer holidays in a seaside resort on the German North Sea coast. I used to live in the north of Germany for some years, not near the coast but quite high up in the north and yearned for the landscape. The flattest plains imaginable where the highest elevation is the dyke which protects the salt meadows from the floods of the North Sea and the rivers flowing into it. Destiny had sent me to the South of the country where it is hilly which some people find picturesque - me not being one of them. Persuading him was a hard piece of work. He comes from Sardinia, an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea where the summers are *always* hot. When he finally succumbed, I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. It couldn't have been worse! The highest temperature was 12°C (53,6°F). During the day! In August! Anyway. One day we were going for a walk on the dyke. I decided to take a photo of the wide, empty landscape when I saw a horse grazing on a meadow. I intended to have it in the foreground with the wide, empty meadow behind it to get an impressive photo. The meadow was accessible. I thought it would be polite to introduce myself to the horse in order not to frighten it. It had a rope round its neck and was tied to a pole. It wasn't a big horse so I wasn't afraid of it although I'm not a horse person. I went near, said, "Hello, horse. I'm going to take a photo of the meadow with you in the foreground. I hope you don't mind." The horse lifted its head, then lowered it a bit which looked like nodding which, as everyone knows, means agreement. I made another step forward, the horse did the same and bit me in my right lower arm. Then it went on grazing as if nothing had happened. The mean beast! Due, or rather thanks, to the very cold summer, I had several layers of clothes on, a blouse, a cardigan and an anorak. The bite only resulted in a bruise which didn't hurt too much. Yet, I was miffed nevertheless as you can imagine. I decided there and then not to continue my career as a photographer of unknown animals. P.S. A friend of ours went to the same resort two weeks later and came back with a sunburn. --- If you're interested in more animal stories, click on the green box above the title.

You were two weeks too early. Unfortunately, there are people who behave exactly like that horse - they appear nice and calm but you could get bitten if you let down your guard.

I like your comment. You're so right! So I have to be happy that it was only a horse that tricked me.

@Kandae11 An animal never means harm. People only interpret its actions as if it could think and plan.

@MALUSE Deep down that horse didn't mean you any real harm - but people do.

Oh dear. A horse bite *and* it stayed that cold.

Indeed. But if it had been warm, it would have bitten my bare arm!

That anorak must have looked like food. At least you weren't hurt as much, it could have been worse. I can't wait for 'replacing you' and start my career as photographer of unknown animals! Pray for me.

It's good you were well protected as a bite from a horse can be very painful, I'm glad it didn't swing round and kick you as well

Oh my, but look on the bright side. Your story is so much better than the typical 'I got a sunburn' one. :-)

During previous summer, I visited Udaipur in India; there I took Pictures with Marwari horse, known as War Horses, but now they are used as Sport horses. They were very friendly; even then I took care before going near to them.

The lesson learned is stay away from animals that you do not know.

As Judy pointed out, a bite can be far less painful than a kick - I've had lots of both at one time or another.

@MALUSE Horses are individuals, the same as people. Some are nasty, some are nice.

But you know how to behave towards horses. Why did they bite and kick you? Are horses spiteful?

In some countries (Turkey I think among them?) a nod means 'no'. Maybe it wasn't a German horse.

Now that you're saying it... It's a Greek gesture. I remember that now. Yet, there is a difference in the interpretation of the up-and-down movement of the head. We see the lowering of the head when someone is nodding --- a 'yes' for us. The Greeks see the head moving upwards with the chin pointing forward ---- a 'no' for them. With so many foreigners living in Germany now I really can't say in which body language the horse was conversing with me. :-)

@MALUSE The difference between human beings and .... is one is courageous other is foolhardy...I would say biting anything that is bigger than me even if a herbivore is foolhardy.

@vandana7 I've bitten horses before that nipped at me. But with the score tied, I was nice to them after that.

My boyfriend had horses that bit as well. They would sneak up behind him and bite the backs of his arms. I guess this horse you saw should have had a beware sign on the pole it was tied to.

@MALUSE His parents took them in as boarders for a few years so maybe they hadn’t been socialized much.

This horse didn't know me, so I think it should be forgiven. But that your bf was bitten by horses that knew him is troubling.

The horses are less friendly that we think. A horse bit my ankle years ago. I was talking with friends in a meadow where several horses were gazing, may be it was not voluntary, but my ankle bleed from the bite. My great grandfather had a beautiful black stallion who had the bad habit to bite all those who tried to approach him, all except my great grandfather.

I must have done something wrong. Yet, as I don't know horse speak, I couldn't ask the horse what it was.

I feel ya @MALUSE . I had 3 horses and they loved to 'nip' me. And I wasn't wearing any kind of padding. I think they did it on purpose. I would be brushing one horse and another one would sneak up on me and get me.
