'Mentioning' When Replying To Comments On Our Posts.

When I first joined this site I noticed that when replying to people who had commented on their posts, the poster tagged them (@) with their user name. I did the same as I thought there might be some financial benefit to the commenter by doing so. I thought perhaps they would get paid extra if we 'mentioned' them as well as replying. I've been here for over two years now, and eventually decided to ask admin about this. This is the reply I got from Alex: "As far as I know, this does not add anything to earnings. It's pretty much just a way of getting their attention and personally addressing a post to them." So I'm not going to tag you in my replies any more - you get notified anyway, and all it means is that you get two notifications - one for my comment and one for the mention. It seems a bit pointless to me.

That's right, our notifications all pile up pretty quickly. Sometimes less is better.

I think so Julia. I know that when I get that double notification myself, I just delete one of them.

If there is more than one reply on a comment, someone commenting to someone else's comment, mentioning the person by @ does make it easier to know who you're talking to or if the response is for you or the other person on the comment. I really hope you followed that. Anyway, that's why I do it. Not always though.

I followed you perfectly Valerie, and I will still tag when on a thread. Otherwise, not.

When a lot of commenting is taking place on a thread, Valerie, I'll just insert the person's name if I know it or a portion of the username without the symbol. That way others can know to whom I've directed my comment without it providing an additional notification.

I always thinks its fairly neat when people do it once in a blue moon to pay some homage, but get what you are saying. Some things are more important than financial gain.

I would still do it if I thought it served a purpose, but as it seems it doesn't, I won't. My replying to your comment (as I'm doing here) is sufficient I think.

@jaboUK Fair enough but I want some homage dammit. Just kidding, did I ever tell you I make bad jokes.

Judging by the number of members who respond to your discussions I'd say you get a considerably large amount of notifications @jaboUK mine don't amount to that many so when they double it's no real problem for me.

I try to make sure it gets put on when I comment or sometimes you can't tell who the reply is to if there are lots of comments.

I hate when it shows two notifications in my feed. I will try to remember to delete the @ unless I am replying to a thread where more then one commenter could get confused who is being spoken to.

On a thread, tagging can be useful.

I've thought of turning the notifications for "mentions" off, but then if someone mentions me in an actual post, I may not receive that notification. It also cuts down on confusion when it's a discussion with several members. Otherwise, I just delete the mentions for comments out of my notifications because, as you said, I'm getting two for the same thing. Maybe someday we'll have the option to just turn off those notifications for our own posts.

@jaboUK I agree, but with regular comments, I'll get the notification anyways. I just won't turn the notification off in my settings (like I did for "likes") because I don't wanna miss getting tagged in a post or thread.

Tagging is useful if you want a member to see something that they otherwise wouldn't see, or as you say, when you are commenting in a thread.

I only mention if it is needed in clarifying to whom my comment is directed to especially in a long thread with comments from multiple different members.

Yes, I will still tag in those circumstances, or if I need to draw someone's attention to something.

I only tag people when there are "chained" comments and you may be in doubt to whom the comment is addressed.

That's the correct way to use tags Anna, on a thread there can be some confusion as to whom you are talking.

But on a reply like this one I am making to you, you are automatically tagged, so mentioning you won't make any difference.

@jaboUK I wonder why I see tags on some (like this one) and not on others when I comment.

I don't think I've tagged users in my replies, unless I want to tag another user who's not part of the comment thread so that they know I'm including them in the comment.
