A Round of Applause

That 30ish was standing there in the crowd with other parents. While listening to the speakers and giving appropriate applause as required, she was busy thinking of work, childcare, grocery etc. Someone began a song with a familiar tune, she listened to it a bit, then continued with her thoughts about this and that. The song stopped, the lady politely clapped her hands only to find her hands stilled by the acquaintance who stood next to her. Round eyes, she said, 'what?' The acquaintance (me) grinned, whispering, 'The school just finished singing the national anthem, you don't want to applaud that do you?' --- How do you think, should people applaud after the singing of a National Anthem? Have you ever applauded by accident while woolgathering? (I almost did a few times to my embarrassment! )

@YrNemo _Perhaps the reason for her sadness in a future post? You piqued my curiosity.

@josie_ It is sad for her, but if I told you the story, you would think the whole thing was disgusting (looking at the people who hurt her!). You would say, 'pigs!'

I wish. She often had a faraway look, very sad. (AND that is why I knew she didn't know what she was doing. Her story is a sad one. I thought of her every now and then. The poor kid!)

The trick is, to politely applaud everything and only seriously when it is a marvelous performance . By doing that, if one makes mistake, then no one would really hear a sound. (I almost did it a few times... )

@Shavkat Beautiful memories however! If everything was too perfect, then it would be too boring when you look back, right?

I had an elderly friend who had Alzheimers' and he used to applaud when the priest finished his sermon.

That was funny but hope no one did mind. I often watch people in church during mass, especially if it is a lengthy one. Quite a good place to observe people.

@YrNemo Vince was an expert at having a little sleep during the sermon. He could sit up straight and his head never jerks like mine does if I start falling asleep.

@JudyEv (I am very good at imagining, fail that, your description of Vince & you when sleeping during sermons was too good! I still remember attending mass and suddenly, in the reverent and silent atmosphere, suddenly someone snored loudly... We kids would snicker with each other!)

have to admit, with many things on our mind, it is something that easily happens. We always politely give applaud don't we, in general cases. In those moments, hearing a National Anthem is like hearing a familiar tune...

There are occasions where we applaud over here once the National Anthem has been sung. Football matches, that sort of thing. But we don't really sing our anthem that much here. Nobody knows the words beyond the first verse!

You are serious? Have to admit, I often woolgather too, and sometimes I try to sing along. Heard that at big Sports events, if the singer performs it in a spectacular way, then it is OK for people to give applause, still, they say we shouldn't applaud however. (From what I found on the internet.)

the faithful would clap their hands after every church mass. i think that was inappropriate, until the priest said, ' we must show our love to the Lord by clapping in acknowledgement'.

@YrNemo i think that is from the movie Sister Act where the nuns sang religious songs in rock, showing Whoopi even shaking her butt. the church is also changing now.

wow, I have never seen such a sight where people giving the priest an applaud for his sermon. Very interesting. I could understand it if it was not a sermon, but about something else (like he was praising some people for helping the church out for this and that!). But then again, things have changed greatly. Five decades ago, guitars and drums were not really allowed to perform in any Roman Catholic church (I think) during mass. Four decades ago, there were arguments about attracting youths to the church by the use of youthful rock music and any musical instruments one could think of. (I could go on and on about this .)

sshhh, have you ever received Holy Communion, and turned to the Priest, politely said, 'Thank You' (instead of Amen)? I committed that quite a few times now, luckily, the priest who gave me Holy Communion didn't know what I was mumbling.

If that were me, I would be embarrassed to ever clap again in public. I guess from now on they should wait until everyone is clapping and hope it is for a Good reason.
