Have a Merry Christmas was Originally a Drinking Toast

With all the silly conflict over whether to say Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas, I read an article which I thought was hilarious. Apparently, when people first began to tell each other to have a Merry Christmas, it was originally a drinking toast ... encouraging those present to have another drink! Personally, I say Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, depending on who I am speaking to. For example, when I am at church or with my Christian friends, I say Merry Christmas. I also have friends who are atheist. I tell them Happy Holidays. They enjoy this time of year, despite their lack of faith. I have a Jewish son-in-law and several Jewish friends. I wish them Happy Hanukah and, later, Happy Holidays. We have some Muslim cousins, as well. Part of their family lives in Saudi Arabia and part of it lives in the United States. I wish them Happy Holidays. (Some people may not realize that many Muslims view Jesus as a Prophet, like Mohamed, and they also honor him.) Several of our neighbors are Buddhist, here in Southern California. They are all very sweet and I wish them Happy Holidays and give hugs to the ones I know best. I wish everyone Happy New Year. So ... there is something jolly you can say to everyone. And, if you want your Christian friends to have another drink, wish them Merry Christmas. Now, I'll pour myself another glass of wine. I plan to have a Merry Christmas, too!

@responsiveme - I love that. We should all go around saying "peace on earth and goodwill to all men." That works for all the religions, and it is a nice thing to say!

Ah! So it was a drinking game? Take a shot every time someone says Merry Christmas! When I was responding to posts yesterday, I greeted Merry Christmas, those who said Merry Christmas on their posts. If they didn't specifically say Merry Christmas, I just said Happy Holidays to be safe.

I think both Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays are wonderful greetings. There is no reason for people to be critical of either one!

That is a nice information. I would like to wish all people here and elsewhere a happy Holiday season, Merry X-Mas and New Year and may peace and prosperity rein supreme on this planet for years to come.

Is Christmas a pagan holiday? I am not religious so do not know. My sister told me earlier, but looked it up and seems to have some interesting stuff on that.

@crossbones27 - The celebration of the birthday of Jesus is not pagan, but many of the ways we celebrate Christmas are based on pagan traditions. Our holidays are pretty much of a mish-mash of a bunch of stuff.

@Daelii - I agree. Nearly all of our holidays around the world combine a wide variety of traditions. One of my Jewish girlfriends has more Christmas sweaters, featuring Santa Claus, than I do!

Most religious holidays adopted / included other faith tradition in their conquest to aqire more religious converts. Yule is a separate holiday that had parts adapted into Christmas.

I did not know about this tradition of toasting while saying Merry Christmas. I never with Happy New Year before the time, some are superstitious and it's considered bad luck. Happy New Years always and only after December 31st midnight.

@DeborahDiane French people are even more superstitious than Italian about this. They wish Happy New Year during all the month of January, in Italy we wish Happy New Years only the few days after the 1st.

@LadyDuck - All these little, harmless differences in cultures make the world a more interesting place. We may find the oddities in other countries to be silly or funny, but they a peaceable differences! Unlikely to start a war! LOL

Now I didn't know it was a drinking toast. I don't drink, but I think I'll have another cup of tea to join your toast. I hope your Christmas was Merry. Mine was.

I am a Hindu and enjoy this season like lots of others.I say merry Christmas and a happy new year...Like the song. Yesterday we visited and prayed in churches which open up their doors and people of all faith flock there. Heard a lot of Merry Christmas being exchanged among all of them
