Marriages could be arranged, proposed or they could be love marriages. Many Indian marriages are arranged and when this mode is opted for the first question girls or their parents will ask is whether the prospective groom drinks or smokes. Going further is based on this answer. My next door neghbour is getting married and even before I could wish her she blurted out saying that he does not smoke nor drink How important is this factor that may or may not impact a marriage?

I am not sure. I think it is better to get married to someone's he or she loved the most. Since it is a culture concern, then it would be a big problem between a marriage. Regardless, I think the woman lost her freedom.

It works both ways. Even the man depends on others to get him a partner

@allknowing I agree. I think both of them are in the same situation.

That's not freedom, but not my culture either. Is there a point to living such a way. I am ignorant on the topic.

When it is an arranged marriage lots of questions are asked as the couple barely gets to know each other before marriage.

Lol..it still exists and non smokers and drinkers are preferred. But it's not necessary that the groom doesn't drink at all. .i have heard about many cases where they say they don't drink or smoke that means , they don't do it everyday but occasionally...

Here the drinking and smoking is related to drunkenness and chain smoking. I assume.

I guess it depends how much he drinks or smokes, particularly the drinking. Someone who drinks a lot is likely to drink more in the future.

Those are bad habits socially, physically and even religiously. So, pretty important for me at least.

Yes, it's very important for me. My boyfriend used to smoke before I asked himto quit smoking as I've got asthma. Now he doesn't smoke at all. Luckily he never drinks.

For me personally, a smoker would be out. My dad was a heavy smoker - and I detested smoking period . . . so smoking could not be in the equation. Drinking - well social drinking is fine - but having a drinking problem would be a problem in marriage.

It depends on the persons preferences but as for me, I don't tolerate smoking at all and light drinking will so but I won't tolerate a drunkard
