A Journey of 1000 Miles Begins with a Single Step

For the second year in a row, one of my walking buddies and I logged in over 1,000 miles of walking. In fact, I walked 1240 and she walked 1187 miles. In our retirement community, they have an annual walking challenge. Those people who sign up for the challenge, report their miles each month and walk at least 1000 miles, are given an award and a t-shirt. My friend and I are so proud we were able to achieve this goal again. Frequently when we walk, we are at the beach walking in the sand, which is a bit more work than walking on a sidewalk, so we really are pleased we were able to go the distance. The things I will do to get a new t-shirt! (LOL)

@marlina - Thank you! I'm pleased with us, too. We wonder, sometimes, how many years we will be able to do it, but we plan to keep at it as long as we can. My friend is 75 and I'm 68, so we joke that we will be doing it another 25 years ... although that is probably pretty unrealistic.

Great photo is that the two of you there? Sure is a lot of walking and I am not sure how much I do but I do a lot also between one thing and another. Congratulations anyway on achieving that both of you. Are you getting a new t-shirt just kidding.

@DeborahDiane It reminds me that I am going to walk a bit more even if its only round the house as at the moment its very muddy out and slippery so not too good conditions for being outside and much better inside. Just saw your photo in the avatar was not sure if it was you at first sight as I was going through this so quickly as its so cold here your fingers can freeze like frozen fish fingers.

@lovinangelsinstead21 - Stay warm. Keep walking around the house. That is a good way to get exercise and stay warm. I pace around my house when it is raining outside.

lol Yes you work rather hard for it don't you. I have been meaning to ask you, how is Elizabeth Wallace. She hasn't been on here for such a long time but I assume you still get together.

@BelleStarr - Yes, we still get together once a month and talk on the phone or text each other between those lunches. She is still waiting for the publisher to publish her book, which has been a very frustrating process. Meanwhile, she has gone on several cruises and seems to be enjoying her home. I will see her next week and I will tell her you asked! If you want to follow her on Twitter, she is @ElizaWallace27

What a great idea to organize a walking challenge. I never cared to know how many miles I walk every day, it would be interesting to know. Doing a thousand miles a year, finally is less than 3 miles a day.

@DeborahDiane The days we do not get outside we walk less, but the days we are outside all the day we make a lot more than 3 miles. I walk about three miles every day to go to collect our mail at our Post Office.

@DeborahDiane I go to the village through a nice path in the park, it's a little less than half hour walk each way and I feel well when I come back home. In Monte-Carlo I walked a lot more, we never moved the car even to go grocery shopping.

@LadyDuck - That is wonderful that you walk to the Post Office. That sounds like a good walk. I have noticed that people in Europe generally walk more than Americans do!

Congratulations for a job well done! Quite an accomplishment, and a healthy one at that! I do a lot of walking at both my FT job and my PT job, so I imagine I probably log more than a 1000 miles per year as well. I know that during the week I spend at Disney World every Christmas with my kids, we log about 13 miles per day at the theme parks. I certainly enjoy walking, and now even more so than running, since my knees are finally crying out for me to take better care of them! lol

@DeborahDiane But in the case of Disney, there are two factors at work here: one, there are breaks in all that walking (such as when we're on rides), and two, we're having so much fun we don't realize how much walking we do!

@moffittjc - Good for you, if you can walk 13 miles. That is awesome! I think the most I have done in a single day was six or seven miles, and I was a wreck the next day! LOL No wonder your knees are crying out! LOL

We try to average about 3 to 4 miles a day. Of course, there are days when we only walk a mile or two, because we are busy, sick or it is a holiday. Obviously, on Christmas and days like that, we barely walk, so we have to walk extra on other days to make up for it.
