a dumbbell and a bag of books

have you ever used a dumbbell or a bag of books as temporary door stoppers? and have you ever tripped on them because you forgot or you were in a hurry? or they're not heavy enough so the door closed and they got squashed? ("A doorstop, also door stopper, door stop or door wedge, is an object or device used to hold a door open or closed, or to prevent a door from opening too widely," as per Wikipedia) here are the book titles, by the way: wild swans three women of china by jung chang the city of joy by dominique lapierre mao's last dancer by lin cun xin

@sjvg1976 we have doormats on doorways, but they're not thin enough to fit.

is it thick and heavy enough to stop it from closing?

I can't even remember when I last used a door stopper! I know I've used rocks or sticks for our wooden gate . . . maybe the gas/water meter guy has tripped over it .

@hereandthere I have never used one for this house. At our last apartments, I always closed and opened the door as needed (I never left the door wide open in case of sneaky intruders). Oh wait, I remember people often used the doorstop for the laundry room because the door was so heavy - it was merely a piece of broken lumber!

@hereandthere One more thing . . . as I brought in the trash bin on our other gate, I saw the brick that my husband uses when he does yardwork to keep that gate door open. I don't use the brick because I can situate the combination lock so the door never shuts on me.

our doors have that thing attached that it slowly closes, but because it slowly closes, some of the dogs sneak inside before the door closes up.

we used to have a cat i called 'bullet' because when someone opens the screen door to come in or go out, he zooms in as fast as a speeding bullet.

Would you be reading those books or you will be using them as permanent door stoppers?

I've been known to use all sorts of crazy things as door stoppers. For my outside door I'm currently using a rather battered looking concrete cat!

I am a huge lover of books. To use a book as a door stopper is sacrilege to me. In my home books are not allowed on the floor. I'm a weirdo. I have, however, occasionally used a shoe as a door stopper. Shoes are allowed on the floor. It's a natural place for them. I also once used a can of paint as a door stopper. Luckily, all the doors in my current apartment stay open of their own accord so I don't need any door stoppers.

If the dumbbells aren't holding your door open then you either live in a medieval castle or your dumbbells are too light

I don't use a door stopper since whether the door is open wide, semi-open or closed, it is not causing me any disturbance when I am sleeping in the room.
