Eyes Staring From The Plate

I eat both fish and meat but I don't want any reminders that they were once living creatures. I like seafood, but if I'm presented with prawns or shrimps that still have their heads on I can't eat them. Pulling their heads off myself is not something I'm prepared to do. I'm the same with lobsters with their legs on, and whole fish staring at you with dead eyes - no thank you. Live fish swimming in tanks in restaurants are another no-no for me. I couldn't give the death sentence to one of them, and then have it appear on my plate a few minutes later. I'm sqeamish where these things are concerned, but I won't be turning vegetarian any time soon. Picture form Pixabay.

I do not mind the sea food or crawfish with the heads on. I know something has to die for me to live.

I could live without any animals in my diet. I would rather live on vegetables or pasta but mostly peanut butter and jelly.

I guess I grew up eating seafood this way (maybe it's a Japanese thing to serve seafood "whole"?). The way the shrimp is in your photo (minus the lemon) is the way my mother serves shrimp on New Year's Day . . . my kids love it and don't seem to have a problem twisting the heads off - so I guess they're used to it too .

@jaboUK It's funny, but I didn't grow up on raw fish - too expensive. By the time my parents could afford it every now and then, I was a preteen and didn't acquire the taste for it (my dad thought I was a fool for that!). Now I eat a little of it, but it's not my favorite . . . I'd rather eat seafood with eyes .

I suppose if you've always had them like that you think nothing of it. What about that other Japanese delicacy - raw fish? Do you eat that? I couldn't.

Exactly. In spain where we stay they have wonderful seafood buffets with really fat prawns, but they've all got their heads on so neither my husband or I will touch them. It even makes me feel a bit sick just watching other people deal with them.

I pulled a lobster out of it's shell, on my plate. It's a tough way to eat, not to mention this is very messy!

I wouldn't care for that either. I love shrimp and most fish. I couldn't become a vegetarian or a vegan. I was brought up on meat and potatoes.

I was brought up that way too, and at least you don't get eyes in meat. In fact most meat doesn't resemble the animal at all, apart from chicken.

Choosing a live fish for my meal is a no no for me too. I have never done that and never will. I will not eat chickens that I rear. they will be just pets. I bury them when their time is up.

That's nice that you bury your chickens. We tried rearing geese for Christmas once (I wrote a post about it) and though I did eat them, I didn't enjoy it and never tried it again.

I would agree with that, I eat all kinds of meat and fish but the last thing I want to see is their heads ... it makes me wonder about those festivals where the pigs head is displayed with an apple in it's mouth.

I would feel the same @jaboUK it's one thing to see something roasting but if it still has it's head I wouldn't be able to eat any of it. Are we picky or what?

@jabouk We were brought up eating the hens and ducks that we played with in the garden and had to disconnect from them when the time came. It is rather creepy when a fish looks at you from the plate.

@jaboUK I could be called a 'pescatarian' - the word used to describe someone who eats no animal flesh - with the exception of fish. You also have the extreme vegetarian and the less extreme - I am the latter . I eat eggs every other week and other dairy products like cheese and soy milk. However I get most of my protein from peas, beans and fortified cereals.
