Well, we've come to the "End of the Line" completing another series of my favorite road songs. Time to "Hit the Road Jack" and see if you can deciher the songs and artists from the following clues. 1. The band did a cover version of this road song written and originally recorded by the Country singer Steve Young in 1969. This song describes the emotions the singer feels as he travels the road, over several bridges and moss covered trees. The road the artist wrote about was located in Montgomery, Alabama. The groups 1980 "live album" version reached #21 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, the last top 40 hit for the band until they reunited again in 1994. 2. This was a #1 Country hit for the artist in 1980, and also one of his biggest crossovers, reaching #20 on the Hot 100, his highest placing at the time. The tune was also nominated for an Academy Award in 1980 for Best Original Song, but did not win. The Country singer recorded this song for the movie Honeysuckle Rose in which he also acted. He was a member of the supergroup "The Highwaymen." 3. The song coincidened with the re-emergence of this artists solo career in 1985, after a multi-year hiatus. The tune was a top ten hit for the country rocker's album, which also featured another #1 hit song, with lyrics about baseball and an outfield position. He was the founder of a very successful bayou sounding band from 1968-72. With 8 gold albums during that span, this Rock Hall of Famer can be very "proud" of his achievements. Alright, that's a wrap! Do you know these "Road-Titled" songs and their artists? Thanks for your comments, reading my post, learning a bit of music history, and attempting to come up with the answers. *Bio info from Wikipedia and songfacts.com Photo- google images/twitch.tv

1. You know, Steve Young didn’t care for their version of that song (although I’m sure he cashed the royalty checks). The “big hit” version was copied, more or less note for note, from Ian Matthews’ version (and if you listen to Ian Matthews’ version you’ll hear that almost immediately). Steve also wrote a song called “Old Memories Mean Nothing to Me,” which has an incredible cover on a bluegrass album I have. 2. I remember the late Randall Hylton spoofing that song with a spot-on impersonation of the Weeded Wonder: “On the commode again, just can’t wait to get on the commode again, Metamucil put my worries to an end, and I can’t wait to get on the commode again.” I saw the Weeded Wonder while I was in the Navy and was seriously worried about a “contact high” if they did a urinalysis. 3. Oh, wow, you didn’t include the biggest piece of trivia about that song? Saul Zaentz, owner of Fantasy Records, sued John over that song, claiming he’d plagiarized himself from “Run Through the Jungle.” JF won the lawsuit, then countersued — and won that, too. Zanz Kant Danz but he’ll steal your money, indeed!!! Great series! As ever, Clueless

Yep, listened to Ian Mathews version and that song could not be improved upon. Eagles covered it exactly. #2 Great comments- if I could just stop laughing I would respond. OK, spreading the wealth, I mean weed for the price of admission, how nice of Willie and the band! #3 I knew about the sue me sue you saga. Thanks for adding it for me. "Zanz Kant Danz ("Vanz Kant Danz" on later editions) apparently was about Saul Zaentz of Fantasy records a pig that can't dance but will steal your money. A great reason to like that song, lol.
