A few days ago @Corbin5 wrote a post about dance hall girls being paid to dance with men in years gone by. These days there is a version of them on some cruise ships, but they are usually mature males. There are a lot of widowed or single ladies on cruises, and it's nice for them to be able to dance. On one of the cruises I was on I got talking to one of these men. He told me that he got his cruise for free in return for dancing with unattached ladies in the evenings. He said he probably spends more time at sea than at home, which suited him well as he was retired and widowed. This is a service provided by the cruise operators in order to keep their customers happy. It sounds like a win-win situation to me as the men get their holiday for free, and the ladies can enjoy dancing. If you were an unattached lady who enjoyed dancing, would you like to dance with one of these men? Or if you are a man would it be something you'd like to do?

I have heard of this before. Sounds fun. I am an attached lady, who has never cruised. If I went I would not get to dance as hubby does not.

I'm attached too, and my husband's dancing days are over - it's nice to watch other people doing it though.

@Fleura Oh yes, we used to go to lots of dances when we were younger, and we would both dance with lots of other people. My husband wouldn't mind me dancing with someone else now, but nobody asks any more

@jaboUK @GardenGerty Couldn't you dance anyway? Or would you not consider dancing with anyone other than your husband?

They had male dancers on the Queen Mary. There must have been at least a dozen. We did hear that they are not allowed to dance consecutive dances with the same lady and there must be no 'cohorting' at any other times. They all seemed to be really good dancers.

Oh I didn't know they weren't allowed to dance consecutive dances with the same lady. I did know about the no co-horting, but who knows if they stick to the rules?

@Poppylicious Lol - if they've got any sense they will keep any 'extra curricular' activity to themselves!

I hope they don't get thrown overboard if non-dancing cohorting is found to be going on! Even unattached single older ladies must have needs!

Why not, if dancing is something you like to do is a funny way to enjoy a free vacation.

I didn't know there was a movie about it. I think it would be great for men who are on their own, if they can dance well

Yes, that's what I thought. Better than spending their time lonely, in front of the telly.

No, I wouldn't because it takes me a bit of getting to know a person before I open up. And usually the interaction last only for the time until the actions of said person contradict their words. This is another thing that I have learned as I age to value quality over quantity in any person and relationships. Saves me a lot of time, hurt and effort.

That sounds really neat. If the guy was friendly and enjoyed dancing then getting a free cruise out of it would be great for him!

I have never heard of this . . . so could a woman get free cruise that way too (not that I'm thinking about it ). I'm just a fool and don't mind dancing by myself - but it might be fun dancing with other fellow dancers - I mean, we did that in our younger days, right?

@jaboUK I told my husband about this - and it got him thinking . As you said, there are more unattached older ladies - so maybe he has a chance to go on a free cruise .

Lol - I haven't seen any women doing it, but there are far more unattached older ladies about than men (women generally live longer than men), so that's where the need is. There don't seem to be as many men without their own partners.

These days there is more of solo dancing and so wonder if there would be many who would seek partners. I do solos at informal gatherings which these they are few and far between.

No, you've misunderstood - the ladies don't pay anything. The cruise line gives the men a free cruise as a reward for their dancing, no actual money changes hands.

I think I would be jealous that, as a woman who enjoys dancing, I would have to pay for my holiday, whereas if I was a man in the same position I could get it for free. With the new ideas that gender is fluid and we should all be able to decide what gender we want to be, I would be tempted to tell them I was a man. If they didn't accept my self-categorization I could then claim they were discriminating against the LGBT-plus-whatever-else-has-been-added-on-these-days community!

These aren't gigolos - gigolos are paid by ladies for their 'favours', whether it's purely escorting them to events, or progressing as far as the bedroom. I love cruising and there's far more to it than sitting on a big boat

@jaboUK Reminds me of when I was in Primary school. Two dancers came in to teach us old dancing. I actually loved it. Like in general I love dancing and even if it means dancing with a stranger but I know that I would feel awkward touching someone and then touching me. But I enjoyed learning old dances. So much fun.
