I used to anticipate all the 3 day weekends we'd get because of some "important" figure or another but now I tend to forget when they happen
Monday the 18th is a holiday cuz of Lincoln and Washingtons birthdays. Yeah, I wasn't planning to go anywhere next week but looks like I'll be changing my plans.
I'm still waiting for the US government to create holidays for the great Native American Chiefs like Sitting Bull or Geronimo, they lost while fighting for the rights of their people, I would think they were noble men.
If you are an American, were you taught about their sacrifices for their people?

Yes, he certainly was. There were so many who tried so hard to bring about peace with those that spoke with forked tongue and then they were either vilified for trying or completely forgotten.
What I really find horrendous is that we cherish our cemeteries and would fight to keep people from desecrating them yet thought nothing of desecrating the cemeteries of the Native Americans.

@rebelann This is true and I share your horror. Years ago I happened to be at the site of the Little Big Horn battle. Something just split me in two. Maybe cause it hadn't been that long since a friend of mine had fallen off a mountain- she was a mountain climber and really didn't have what it takes. I don't know. Grief smacked me aside the head and for a bit I was truly messed up.

That idea would benefit anyone who gets a holiday out of it but there are some tribes that were completely annihilated, our forebears succeeded in committing genocide and the idea of committing genocide was blessed by president andrew and his congressmen/senate. Hitler got his ideas from that portion of history.

Those events are sickening @DianneN
Of course I'm sure it happened many times throughout history, I've heard the original Scotts are also either extinct or nearly so.
It's sad to realize that for all the good people that we know about either through history or in present times there are an equal number of hateful abusive ..... I just can't call them human, I don't want them to be tied to humanity.

I had to learn of their history on my own.

It's a shame, the least the schools could do is teach the truth about the Trail of Tears and President Jackson's government and their mandate to try to exterminate as many indians as they could.

Weekends and holidays lose meaning once a person is retired.

It does seem like there should at the very least be a Native American's Day, I don't think America is quite ready yet to face that part of their history.

If we can all face what happened in Germany in WWII then it's high time we faced what they did in the 1700s and 1800s to the native Americans. I know there's no way to make up for genocide, its done and they will never be recovered but the least we can do is acknowledge those atrocities that happened. I think they deserve more than just a day, after all African Americans get a whole month and they were not native to the Americas.

I didn't learn that much about Indians in school. Plenty Coups is one of my heroes now, in part because he did his vision quests in mountains I've hiked in and see every Summer. I did some research on my own and learned about him.

I've never heard of him, but then I was more into Chief Dan George, he made so much sense to me and so many of my generation got really interested in Native Americans.

Maybe we should petition for those men to have a day. I agree the Indians get no attention!

I think the people of their tribes should be recognized for what their ancestors endured at the hands of the Europeans of that time. From what little I've been able to learn only the French actually tried to get to know them.
