I was under the impression it was a gang thing. Something to do with letting people know that there is a gang there who supposedly are in control of the area! Who knows.

andria, that means that gangs did it? Not here. I am sure it was just a prank here.

andria, it is not a gang area. There is a neighborhood Synagogue there behind it and I am sure it was a joke.

I did not see who did that either and wonder when they did it. It is an area where lots of people walk by.

Maybe someone's repairing the electric post and forgot to get his boots.

We went canoeing in the mountains of Arkansas one year and they had a "shoe tree" with many pairs of shoes over the branches. I've also seen a pair over a light line like the one in your photo.

I have seen shoes and boots hanging like that. I’ve heard it’s the kids who do it just for fun.... I hope the shoes were not good ones...

They say it's common in some Latin American countries. When I went to Ecuador, I've seen the same thing in various places of the country. My Venezuelan friend told me that it's usual to see this.

@Hannihar - I don't know why people do it, but I see it once in a while here in the United States, too. I hope they weren't good shoes! LOL

When I was in school the kids would carry their tennis shoes to school for gym and tie the laces together so they were easier to carry. One day one of the bullies grabbed a pair of the shoes and threw them up over the lines like this and the kid could never get them down.

You know here on Oahu, they do that too. My guess is that someone just got tired of their shoes and decided to make a conversation piece so they threw them up there, maybe missing a few times. The pair comes crashing down near them, so they must do it late at night when no one is around for the people to see it the next day like you and me who wonder why they do it.
