Read the comment section of this video, People are rampantly saying Mirai Nagasu is not American because she is of Japanese descent. Despite of the fact she is born is raised in California and does not speak Japanese.
White Supremacist kept on saying she should not be be representing the US because she is not white and "doesnt look American"
Then there are also racist Asians claiming her saying she is theirs.
. She is an Asian American but she doesn't not represent Japan because USA is her home and its the culture she identifies with. She lives in the US, she is raised in the US and she loves the US.
American is not race. People of all colors can be Americans. Even the White people in America are from Europe. Everyone are immigrants except from Native Americans.

@CaptAlbertWhisker It's so stupid. I guess I am just as "Japanese" as her . . . we're both 2nd generation Japanese-Americans except that both her parents are immigrants, so she at one time had dual citizenship. They must be saying the same about the Shibutani's (the Japanese-American ice dancing siblings). In the end, it's not about the countries they represent . . . it's about how far they get with their talents. The racist arguments are lame!

@much2say I found out most people calling Mirai as not American are Europeans ,White Supremacist and Asians. The White Supremacists are obviously discriminating her, the Europeans on the other hand are ignorant about the difference between nationality and etnicity. In case of Asians, its divided between claimers and traitor accusers.

I agree with you. Why not people just focus enjoying the nice performance? It makes pointless to pay attention to the race or even argue with it. I remember there is also a black runner represented Japan in summer Olympics in Brazil. Although he is a black person, but he was born and grows up in Japan. He is already a Japanese.

I say pure stupidity. She is what should be referred to as an American-Japanese. She was born there and is American. I was born American and also raised Latvian because my parents were Latvian immigrants. I am American-Latvian but still American and looking forward to returning to my homeland.

For some reason, People think only White and black people are considered Americans. Asian Americans are not American for them eventhough they are in the US all their lives.
