Sleep, Health & Baby Boomers

Do you have trouble sleeping? What reasons would you give for your lack of sound sleep? This little poem of mine says it all about getting quality sleep, especially baby boomers. Staying up late Counting those sheep, Tossing and turning Unable to sleep. "As we age, the ability to get 7-9 consecutive hours of sleep becomes more difficult. Older adults tend to spend less time in deeper stages of sleep." Research conducted by the National Sleep Foundation supports this theory as 35% of Americans say their sleep quality is poor to fair. This can be detrimental to health according to studies which associate poor sleep with adverse affects on mental, physical and emotional well-being. There are many reasons for disruption in sleep patterns. Age-related medical conditions and medications used to treat health issues contribute to our waking up during the night. With age our sleep patterns also change causing us to sleep earlier and wake up earlier. In addition, chronic disorders like sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and insomnia afflict many people. Just how does sleep deprivation effect our health? "Good sleep supports brain function associated with learning and remembering. Inability to sleep has been linked with depression. Lack of sleep makes it more difficult to make decisions. Interrupted sleep can hurt our physical health and make it hard to maintain a healthy weight." Short of getting a My Pillow what can we do to improve our sleep quality? Some suggestions were to modify our lifestyle. Things like not having caffeinated drinks at night, avoiding acidic foods, turning off the TV, meditation, and hot baths before bedtime are ways to combat sleep deprivation. Now, all this sleep talk has me thinking of a song to avoid playing before going to bed. Just a suggestion, but listening to Eric Clapton's "After Midnight," might not be the best way to prepare yourself for some restful sleep. Perhaps you have some other sleep suggestions? I did notice that I was getting older I sleep less and less. Back when I was young up to my 20s...I go to bed at 8pm and fall asleep by 9. Because I had to wake up at 6am for work and 8am on weekends. And I remember still feeling a little bit tired. But in my 30s, I notice I slept less and less. Now I go to sleep at 10 or 11 and would wake up at 6am.

Yes, it is interesting how are sleep patterns change as we age. Work routines definitely set that internal sleep clock don't they?

@toniganzon I definitely can relate to that! I even remember times I woke up thinking it was a work day when it was not

I find myself waking up in the middle of the night. Usually I can go back to sleep, but when I was younger I never had these interrupted sleep patterns. Age has definitely caught up to me.

@LadyDuck Yes, I can understand that. For me it depends on the time of night. To close to morning it is hard for me to sleep restfully.

I don't sleep well. I've just about forgotten what it's like to have a really good sleep.

@Ganma7 I'm sure it's to do with my age as I used to sleep well.

@dgobucks226 - I've found that standing in a hot shower helps for some reason. Or, I just get up and walk around

Yes, I do too. They say certain medications are triggers one being antihistamines which I take for allergies. Also medical conditions like diabetes or an iron deficiency (which I have). I usually get up and massage the legs in hopes it will stop. What do you do?

@dgobucks226 DB, so much is changing and if we do not go with it we get left behind. There are things I have learned and things i have not.

I sleep pretty well for the most part unless I work the night shift at my job. Then I am all out of whack.

It does help to have a consistent sleep schedule. Weekends sometimes throw me off my usual wake up time.

Yes, I've had experienced it before I was sleeping late because of excessively using the internet. I lost too much weight so I had to change my sleeping habit. I lessen using the internet at night I make sure I woke up early in the morning so I would feel sleepy when the night comes.
