No I am not pregnant! It's just a food belly...

I went to the supermarket the other day and ran into someone I've met a few times. She happens to be related to my husband's co-worker. The lady looked at me and asked "Are you okay? Which doctor do you have?" I was surprised by her questions and wondered why the heck she would ask me that and why she wanted to know who my physician was. Did I look ill or something? My reply was, "I don't have a doctor right now," ready to add that I don't have health insurance. Before I could say that though, my husband jumped in and said to her, "Everything is fine. She is not pregnant!" Realizing, after his response, what she meant when she asked me about the doctor I have and whether I am okay, I laughed and said, "I love eating pastries," hence for my belly. She laughed and we parted ways. This made me wonder... is there no way to differentiate between a person having a food belly and a person being pregnant? And is it bad or offensive to assume someone is pregnant, when the reality may be they are not?

I think such a question can end a hitherto friendly relationship.

I was in a situation where someone rubbed my belly for a second and said "Congratulations!" I had to break the news to the lady that I am not expecting, that I love my pastries. She didn't apologize. She just laughed and walked away.

@lovebuglena I find that insolent! If someone rubbed my belly, I'd slap their hand.

@MALUSE It felt awkward and weird when the lady did that.

That was too much of her...presuming something and thinking that the presumption is correct...asking some ridiculous question in public all looks very funny and unbearable ! I am wondering how people can't differentiate a pregnant belly with a food belly...both are different! But don't you think now you should do something about this food belly of yours dear friend @lovebuglena

You think I want this food belly? Heck no! It's not that easy to get rid of it though. I used to be skinny. No belly in sight. Things changed I think after I turned 30.

I'd think that the belly is shaped differently when it's a pregnancy as opposed to when it's just a food belly. But I am no expert.

I would never remark on anyone's (non)pregnancy until they mentioned it first.

Terrible thing for anyone to assume - least out loud!

It sure is. Some people say things without thinking and I hate when that happens. But whether I am pregnant or not, a person shouldn't ask who my doctor is, unless maybe it's a close family member.

People have said to me,"You are skinny. You just have a big belly"... If they knew my story, maybe they would think twice. I have over-production of cortisol, which is a stress hormone that goes straight to the belly, caused by stress, anxiety and fear.

I hate it when people just assume things or say things without thinking.
