lots of kitchen time for me

I put together a casserole last night, and cooked it today. It was great to come home to after going to the car parts place. My casserole had boneless and skinless chicken in it. I had enough left over to boil for Princess to have home made cat food. I have been threatening to do this for months as she does not eat well. All she has been wanting is chicken flavored kitty treats and I am pretty sure they are not that healthy. At one time we were told to just give cats dry food to keep their teeth clean. The pendulum has swung the other way. Wet food is recommended so that they get enough water. It seems cats in general do not have a strong thirst instinct. I do not believe the experts on thirst have met Princess. She loves to sit on the bathroom sink and drink. Maybe her treats have too much sodium. Treats are a habit my sister started her on when she lived with us. Anyway, home made cat food at my house consists of boiled chicken, with some whole oatmeal to soak up the broth. I also add about a half cup of pumpkin puree from a can. I could have put olive oil in and probably should in the winter. I had two sickly cats that ate this meal all the time. Princess is not sickly, but she does not like the various wet foods I buy, so it is a waste. She loves this home made meal. One more trip to the kitchen. Hubby requested a breakfast casserole again. This one has a bottom crust of hashbrown potatoes then egg is poured over the top. It has bacon bits, garlic, onions, bell pepper and mushroom plus seasonings. When the egg part was done I topped it with cheddar cheese. It is cooling so I can put it away in the refrigerator. It is good to be out of the kitchen.

I thank God for giving me the sense to home can meals, We had beans and greens for Tony and I had veggie chili. It is very nice to just heat and eat after a hard days work.

I need to learn to do so. I love having the prep work done and food ready quickly.

The breakfast casserole sounds so yummy. That is so nice of you to cook that healthy food for your picky cats. Maybe I should treat my cat every few days to some warmed food I can add water too. I do that with my puppy's dinner.

I would rather cook for her and have her eat it than constantly throw out what I buy. It is less wasteful in the long run.

It sounds a fun time to have an experiment in the kitchen department.

Almost everything I do in the kitchen is an experiment, unless it is doing dishes.

@GardenGerty I wish I can have a handful time to do this kind of experiment.

It seems that the so called "experts" change their suggestions according to what the big companies want to sell. They do the same for humans, eggs were bad for our health a few years ago, but now they say they are a good source of protein and safe to eat. I do not trust them anymore. The cat of our neighbors come every day to drink from our pond.

A huge dish of fresh water for the neighbor's cat. I find that if Princess has a choice she eats a variety of food and finds water to drink anywhere but in her own dish.

@GardenGerty I have put outside a bowl of clean water, the cat still prefers to drink from the pond.

When I helped cat Vets, they gave pumpkin to the patients for a natural laxative. I wonder if you could give some vitamins to your dear kitty? She needs a little taurine to keep her from going blind.

I think the treats have taurine. I will have to check. I know that this has stopped her ravenous hunger and begging. Lots of vets recommend pumpkin for cats and dogs both. My cats recommended it for themselves. . . I would be making butternut squash soup and they would smell it and come beg. I believe the vitamin A in it helps their skin as well.

This is chicken thigh meat, and dark meat poultry is a good source of taurine.

@GardenGerty That's good. I used to love to bake those fatty thighs when I ate meat.

You would think they could make something like this, it is not hard and you can make a lot of servings at one time.

That sure is a lot of kitchen time. Wow. I love cats but I am allergic. Sad. But I am okay not owning a pet. I keep myself busy throughout the day. Lots of time is spent waling, watching TV and being on my computer. Which reminds me, I need to write another post. It has been a while. I hope your cat decides to try some cat food again. Hope he enjoyed the meal.

Princess will be our last pet. Travelling and taking good care of her are difficult. On weekends she stays home alone. On long trips she goes with us and is welcomed in my daughter's home.

@GardenGerty They are greta to have but I get what you're saying. I just cannot afford a pet right now. Maybe when I am a bit older. But right now I don't want the responsibility of having one.

I'm glad Princess eats what you prepare for her. Some cats won't and that would be so annoying after you'd gone to a lot of trouble.

I have not met a cat that turns down chicken cooked at home. She has turned down almost all commercial canned food lately.

Both of your casseroles sound good. We enjoy casseroles. Both our kitties drink pretty often, especially after they have eaten. We give them chicken when we make it. Neither like can cat food so we'll give them tuna 1-2 times a month. I have a recipe to make homemade treats. I haven't tried yet. They're healthy and happy.

Princess does not seem to care for any kind of sea food cat food, and not really human tuna either, although she likes the juice from the can.
