Black Panther, a short report

I read various reviews about this movie, I needed to watch it to make my own opinion. Honestly, after half an hour, I was tempted to leave. It is full of little incoherences which, added together, made me think that it was a bad movie. Worst, it looks like an American view of a fantasized Africa. But, against all odds, it starts to turn really good : many characters have charisma, including the bad one, and we are immersed in a kind of Greek tragedy, except that the Greeks are Africans from Wakanda. Wakanda is supposed to be a third world country, but in fact it has the most advanced technology in the world that it hides to the rest of us. Wakandese are divided between sharing their technology, hiding it, or even rejecting it, which is the case of one of their tribes, kind of Spartans defending their traditions. Finally this innocent-looking Marvel comics movie asks a lot of philosophical questions : how should we react in front of injustice ? how to help those having nothing when one has everything ? where the reason of State should stop and when morals, ethics, honor should start ? And there is also a lot of action, a black super-hero, and a good dose of humor. Despite of a questionable and heavy-handed beginning, I recommend it.

I am going to see it. I did not know what to expect, but from your description it sounds interesting enough to be seen.

@LadyDuck What did he said today? I did not thought that he was senile when he asked to the English journalist if she was married. He was very "green".

It is a super-hero movie, not a philosophical film, so do not expect too much, but it is better than average for this kind of movies. If you survive at the beginning you will probably like it.

@topffer I hope to survive the beginning. Have you read the new gag our our Berlusconi. I think he is affected by senile dementia.

Mainly, but there are also a few white "colonizers". The movie approachs xenophobia originally. If I give details I have to spoil.

@YrNemo I saw the teaser but I do not remember if there is only black actors in it ? The movie was certainly primarily made for a black public, but it is also interesting for others, and I found it good.

I heard a lot of fantastic reviews about it too - but we normally do not watch these "newer" super hero movies. But my daughter recently went to a good friend's 13th birthday party . . . the group went to see the movie the birthday boy picked out - and it was the Black Panther. They all actually enjoyed it (even my daughter) - still, I don't know much about the details except that it was quite entertaining for these young teenagers. When the trailers started coming out, the Black Panther costume threw me off . . . it reminded me too much of Batman, at least the head/ears part . . . I thought it was a Batman mutation .

@topffer Of course in these kinds of movies the bad guy never wins. I've seen reviews that say this is the best out of all those super hero movies - so interesting that you say it is better than the usual. So do you think the characters and plot are better crafted, or at least different - away from the typical super hero movie formula? I can appreciate that!

@topffer Different is good . I normally don't like super hero movies because it is all typical and similar (even my son does not care for super heroes but most of his peers do). Ok, I shall have to see this one eventually!!

"an American view of a fantasized Africa" -- what else did you expect ? When I read 'fantasy' and 'science fiction' in the description of the film, I knew it was not for me.

There are a lot of clichés at the beginning that made me ask myself if I should have invested in a ticket for this movie, but it finally turned to be a very good movie. Indeed, if you do not like science fiction it is probably not for you.

Well, it's a movie so its just practically fictional story from the real culture that it represents. Weird they didn't make any movie for Black Widow and Hawk Arrow, sadl.

The way they present Wakanda/Africa at the beginning is too americanized and fantasized even for a complete dummy knowing nothing to African cultures. This said, it is the best Marvel movie I watched

I walked out a few times. Last time was for a detective story directed by Guillaume Canet 3 or 4 years ago. I usually like what he does, but this one was really bad.

there is a lot of political undertones in the movie. whats funny to me is, some people liked the political part of the movie, i laughed at that because its the same things trump says, but they dont see it. anywhoo, i liked the film. i was entertained.

The comics is old and I am not sure that there is anything related with Trump. Maybe a few allusions here and there : the guy refusing to share their technology at the beginning because they would have refugees, the morals of the end (wise men build bridges, stupid men build walls), but globally I did not saw it like a political movie. A bit bugged by hearing white people called "colonizers" while the Wakandese had always been the wise guys more neutral than Swiss, but I suppose it is part of the game for a black movie.

The beginning and some synthesis image effects are rubbish, but overall it is better than the average super-hero film, so I hope you will not complain.
