An enjoyable hike yesterday afternoon!

I took my young neighbor friend and his mom on a hike in the Berkeley Hills yesterday afternoon. We timed it so we could see the sunset and maybe see a horned owl, as they come out at sunset. The hills to the East were a beautiful emerald green, thanks to the recent rain, and we heard coyotes howling on our way back. We also got to see one horned owl, perched in a tree less than 20 yards from us. The photo is of yesterday's sunset. If you click on it, you'll be able to see our famous Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.

That's a beautiful sunset. And yes, I did see the Golden Gate Bridge. I'm glad you were also able to see a horned owl.

That was exciting. I think that's the closest I've been. And it was REALLY exciting for my young friend and his mom.

@just4him For me, it was very peaceful. I know that trail like the back of my hand, and it's always (except when the wind and rain howl) so quiet and lovely up there.

@1hopefulman The weather is temperate. I don't find the Bay Area beautiful overall. But wherever you are, you're only an hour (or less) away from something pretty.

@TheHorse And while you're at it, pop me some corn and sprinkle a little garlic powder on it.

Thanks! It was a lovely hike. Being so close to the owl was really cool. He or she didn't seem afraid of us.

@JudyEv Are all owls nocturnal? I always see them as the sun is setting or later.

Thank you for sharing this gorgeous photo in one of my posts too. That bridge really is iconic, isn't it?

@spiderdust I agree. I use the Bay Bridge way more than the Golden Gate.

Yes! It and the Bay Bridge were being built at the same time!

@TheHorse The Bay Bridge almost feels more significant, since we locals have to go across it way more often.

Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. Are there any problems in your area with hiking areas damaged by too much rain or too much fire?

Not where I've hiked recently. I haven't been up to the fire areas, though. The mud slides were 330 miles to the South, in Santa Barbara.

Awesome photo. Sounds like a lovely hike. When I have had the chance to get out into nature I love to hear coyotes or wolves howling and owls hooting.. Nice sounds.

We didnt even know he or she was there until another hiker came by and pointed the owl out. Then it started making the classic owl sound.
