A Book Rant! Arrggghhhh!

Books, glorious books!

You know what annoys me about modern books? The fact that so many of them are parts of series of books and this isn't always made clear on the cover of the book! See, I buy the majority of my books in charity shops - I read such a lot that I rarely buy a brand new book as the costs would absolutely rocket. The only 'problem' (and I use the word loosely as it's not really a problem) is in charity shops you're buying the books other people have donated, you can't go out looking for a specific book as mostly that won't be there - it might be and when that happens it's great, but most of the time charity shop book shopping means browsing and seeing what catches your eye. When I like the cover and blurb of a book I'll buy it, add to my 'to read' pile and get round to it eventually. But nowadays this is getting harder for the simple fact that I'll get home, start reading - then realise this is yet another fabulous looking book which is 'number 3' or so in a series. If the story is good enough I'll carry on reading, but usually when this happens the book goes back on the bookcase as I hate the thought of missing out on the beginning of a story (and I also don't like being forced into hunting down and paying for the rest of the series!). Most of the time I just want a book that I can read cover to cover and then move on to another one, not four or fives novels just to cover one story! *Disclaimer - yes, I like a series of books as much as the next person. I just want it to be CLEARER that this isn't a stand alone book* Photo credit - Pixabay

Before you buy a book, you can check on amazon if it's part of a series or a stand-alone book. If you haven't got an e-gadget with you when you go shopping, someone will certainly help you out with theirs.

@marlina It's common sense, a quality which I don't find too often on this site.

@MALUSE There are a few Mylot users that have a lot of common sense, others: NIL.

I do not like reading books who have sequels.

I agree. I think its a marketing thing. Like, hook people in and theyll want to get all the books in the series. I somehow also manage to start reading a bookr ight in the middle of a series too.

As a writer I disagree. When we create characters they become our children and like real children they usually don't have one tale to tell. Though in my novel I did Garry the story over 3 generations to avoid a sequel.

I am one of those that this happens to only I get the ones that start at the beginning and then have to get the rest of them to finish the series out. I am working on doing that now I started some series last year and have not finished them out yet.

I think book series are a way to hook you into buying from an author by publishers. I don't think I'll enjoy reading the same story in a series. It's not like a soap where one doesn't mind the series.

There certainly seems to be a huge number of books which are sequels or parts of a series.

I agree. You read book #3 and the author assumes you know the back story of the characters and the reader gets a little lost.
