Online Arguments

We can't get on with everyone, that's fact, both in the real world and online but most of us learn to treasure the good relationships in life and make the best of those people with whom we don't click. The problem with online conversation is text can often be misinterpreted because all we have are the words and there is no visual information like facial expression or body language. I haven't been upset by many people (although it did happen on a couple of sites but not MyLot) and although I tried not to let it get to me it actually did. I suppose with the thousands of personalities which come together on forums it's bound to happen on occasions. Have you ever been upset by anyone online?

@LadyDuck I think it's unavoidable at times but I don't like upsetting people so I try not to. I don't get involved in discussions about politics or religion as I know emotions can run high.

@LadyDuck I haven't seen that many discussions on those topics here although there are some religious people. I know there was one argument on religion recently although I wasn't involved as I think it was before I came back .. I'm doing well as I've been back more than 2 weeks and haven't got bored yet

@sprite1950 I avoid discussions about religion and I stay away from politics. People can get angry easily about those two topics.

I agree with what you say about people might take what you say in a text the wrong way. So if you are afraid of that happening it might be best to call the person and tell them what you have to say.

@sprite1950 Right. The way I can tell if someone has a issue with me is they write what they are saying in all capital letters.

@Tina30219 Yes it's like shouting and it is very offensive.

@Tina30219 I can usually tell if someone is having a bop at me and normally I will let it go. I'm not easily wound up.

OH yes and since I'm not in any other site but mylot, I've been upset by people here. There was even one member who's no longer here (and I bet he was banned) who said that people from my country are stupid and he said I was stupid. That was hitting below the belt. And of course that got to me. He doesn't know a thing about me to call me stupid and probably if I showed him how many degrees I have and which university I went to, he might even accused me of being a fraud. But those kind of people do not deserve our attention. They need to be ignored but of course we can't help feeling bad.

@toniganzon What a terrible thing to say. I would be hurt by that too as I can tell from your posts that you are certainly not stupid. I've been hurt by unkind comments even though I try not to. It's just people sitting behind a computer screen who probably would never say it to your face,

@sprite1950 That is so true. Those are people who have a lot of insecurities in their lives. They don't deserve our attention. Over the years I've learned to control myself from responding back to those idiots. But I can't say I'm not emotionally affected. I still do. But only for a short time. I told myself, those kind of people don't deserve an ounce of my attention.

@toniganzon It's best to ignore and move on even though it's very tempting to retaliate.

I only get upset if someone thinks things that are evil online, I try not to let it bother me though.

@LeaPea2417 There are some bad people about but at least they can't hurt us physically when it's online.

I try to avoid confrontations both online and in the real world. I agree that not being to see a person's expressions or body language makes it much easier to get the wrong idea about what a person might be saying.

@JudyEv I hate falling out with people, it makes me feel bad inside. I remember having an argument on another forum which upset me for weeks.

I definitely have, especially in my early days of being online. It still happens, despite my knowing that a sentence can be misunderstood without the visual nuances.

@spiderdust The worst arguments I had were on HubPages where a whole lot of people ganged up on me because I said I had been paid on Bubblews. For some reason they thought I was in league with Arvind, the site owner , and a small one on ForumCoin when someone told be to get lost . Fergal gave him a temporary ban for it!

@spiderdust I did well out of Bubblews for a while but it had this annoying thing where it crashed constantly while you were working on it. I left before it folded.

@sprite1950 I remember you telling me about that one on HubPages! I totally missed out on the Bubblews experience, but from what I've heard from others, it's just as well.

Yes, just like real life it happens. Some people's personalities are exaggerated online because they feel safe behind their computer. They probably would not say half the things they say to someone's face.

@snowy22315 Yes I often think that. It's easy to be brave when you do not have to face a person.

I don't make online friends , I just have acquaintances so no way I can be upset of someone online. Usually if someone starts being rude I ignore him or her and move away.

Several times. Annoyed, discouraged and upset but I got over it. That's part of living. You cannot satisfy everyone and vice versa.

@mydanods It can be upsetting but with time we get over it and learn to avoid people who we know we don't get along with.

yes I agree. That could happen since some people doesn't know when to use an exclamation point. Some people misinterpret it as a person who gets mad and that probably the main cause of misunderstandings. And no that hasn't happen to me yet. I have never encountered any misunderstandings over the internet.
