Another Year Older

Yesterday, March 9th, I turned 52 years young. I spent the day quietly with my fiance just watching movies and TV shows and receiving many birthday wishes from friends and family through text messages and phone calls. In the evening after getting hooked to several episodes of Kitchen Nightmares, We took a cab to a liquor store where a flat of Natty Daddy and a carton of smokes for him, a bottle of Barcardi Silver with a 2 liter diet coke for me were purchased. We then returned home and ordered Chinese to be delivered. It was a great birthday. Many fear growing older but I don' mind it so much. We are only as old as we feel and I always feel 25. :-) I am blessed to be given the years that I have. As the years have come and gone, there have been changes in my attitudes and outlook on life. Today, I am much more oriented towards my goals moving forward with fierce determination. I also have much more control than I did back then. Looking back, I remember being legendary for my wild, unpredictable spontaneity. When I turned 20, I had been hitchhiking around the country-catching rides with big rig truckers. Yet, through the years I’ve discovered that while spontaneous decisions and behaviors satisfied my immediate need for emotional release, those actions always came with not so positive consequences. With age comes wisdom if you allow life to teach you its lessons. I have a better sense of what is right for me. While I value the opinions of others, I allow no one to dictate my actions. I prefer to be accepted for the kind of person I really am rather than for someone’s preconceived notion of who I should be. You can say that one of the benefits I’ve derived from growing older is an inner peace that pervades my life now. I have also developed a sharper ability to observe what is going on around me. I suppose when I was in my twenties I was so wrapped up in myself that I was less attuned to others. Now, I find myself much more sensitive to the needs of others- even to the point that I at times neglect my own needs. I feel these are all wonderful benefits to growing older. I truly don’t mind getting older, as long as I continue to do it gracefully. You see, now that I am older, I like myself much better than when I was in my twenties.

I will be 68 on August 1st and not thrilled to turn another year older. I will get together with a friend and maybe check to see if this other friend and I can go out to eat finally. We have been trying for quite some time. His birthday is the day after my cat's birthday and something comes up so we have not been able to get together.
