Is it Rational to Aim to Live in Planet Mars?

If you search in youtube, maybe you happen to watch a video about Elon Musk and his goal to colonize the Red Planet, that is Mars. He and his company, SpaceX, is spending billions of dollars building rockets that will eventually be used to transport humans and equipment to Mars. The US Government thru NASA is giving full support in terms of funding for all his endeavors. Yet, in second thought, is it worth to spend billions for such grand goal? When there is global poverty and hunger and sufferings at this present time, is it rational or even moral to spend such huge amount of money for space explorations when it can be used to alleviate the sufferings of millions on Planet Earth? Why aim to colonize a Red Planet with zero oxygen? Or is it just creating an alternative place to evacuate in case a threat of extinction of planet earth may happen in the near future? I think it best to use the money to solve problems on earth, instead of wasting it to such wasteful and impossible mission.

You know, I get what your saying but... No one in this world would be hungry or homeless and everyone would have full medical if we stopped funding wars. Its everyone's priorities. Even me. I just spent money buying hair dye a vanity item when there are better things I should have probably bought. The space exploration isn't a bad thing in my mind. If it brings humanity closer to see other people as humans... Then so be it. People going without food or shelter isn't the fault of space exploration. Its the fault of selfish people like trump who focuses on building walls and military parades instead of taking care of people.

It is true that space exploration is important and may not be connected at all with the sufferings of millions of people in poverty, but I just want to point out that colonizing a planet that is not intended for human habitation is completely irrational if not lunacy and a total waste of resources (in terms of billions of dollars), which can instead be used to solve the serious problems of humanity. But I agree with you that it is everyone's own priorities. Sadly, we cannot do anything about it.

@levis2020 how sure are you its not? We have wrecked the oceans and climate. In the process of science and space exploration, we can learn new things that could improve overall life on this planet. Its just, the human want isn't there. Take any money that is used for space exploration and forget it exists. There is still plenty of money and resources to take care of the planet and all people.

Yes I think it is a good idea as some day this earth will be gone.

@levis2020 I think it is possible but far in the future, by that time too late perhaps

Maybe that is Elon Musk's motivation why he is passionate to realize this mission impossible. To have an alternative planet in case something goes wrong with Earth. I just don't think it to be possible.

@Courage7 Yes, maybe, who knows? But it will cost a lot! Money and resources that can alleviate millions from hunger and poverty, or build projects on earth that will be beneficial to mankind at present and near future.

We waste on Mars, we waste on earth, we waste in many areas. If we understood the commandments of God to love our neighbor as ourselves the earth would be different.

@levis2020 So true! In general, people will not change unless they are forced to do so.

Yes, I believe it is true. The reality is the greater resources of the earth are being wasted into unimportant and even destructive things. The most important matter, that is the welfare and betterment of humanity is being sacrificed.
