New York Adventure -- Narrow escape?

This happened one memorable summer when I was staying with friends on Long Island, New York. I loved traveling on the Long Island railroad train - and that's where I met a handsome well spoken guy one morning. He was a good conversationalist and I felt very comfortable with him -- so upon our arrival in the city I accepted his invitation to have a bite to eat at Burger King. Afterwards we exchanged phone numbers and went our separate ways. The next few days we chatted constantly on the phone, then made plans to meet in the city on the weekend. I was up early that Saturday morning, trying to decide what to wear for my date - and the phone rang. There was quite a bit of background noise, but I recognised his voice. He informed me that he was calling from Riker's Island prison. That he had been picked up by the police for violating his probation. During our many hours of conversation - not once did he mention anything about being in trouble with the law. Needless to say, that was the last time we spoke - and I was thankful that I had not given him my address. Have you ever found yourself in a situation - relationship or otherwise - where you barely missed potential danger or trouble?.

@Kandae11 I am pretty sure you would have not given the address before knowing more about him.

And it would have been my friends' address. Of course I would have asked permission before doing that - and I would have waited to get to know him much better.

Yes, at least he was honest. He didn't have to reveal the true situation then - but I could tell he had really liked me. He knew if he had told me before about his problems with the law I would not have made plans to see him again.

@shaggin It was a white collar crime involving fraud - well that's what he told me.

That must have been quite an experience talking to your potential date in prison. Did you ever find out what he was in for?

If I remember correctly, it was something to do with fraud - but that is what he told me - can't know for sure.

About 10 years ago, I met and started dating a woman who had recently gone through a divorce. She said her ex-husband was abusive and had serious anger issues. One night, we were asleep in bed at her house when the ex-husband showed up with an ax and started chopping down the front door to the house. We called the police but when they came they said there was nothing they could do...it turns out that the mortgage on the house was in his name. The police said that since it was his house, he had a right to be there and could chop down the door if he wanted to. Although they couldn't do anything to him, one of the officers said he would park his cruiser in the driveway and just sit and wait to see if the guy would do anything dangerous. The guy eventually got the message and left. The next day she went and got a restraining order on him, and she had to move out since the house was technically still his. Needless to say, I didn't date that woman very much longer.

Wow! - Did he get in the house? Where was he when the police came? It is never a good idea to sleep in a woman's house - especially one with an ex. Safer to invite her to your house, because you would know what your ex is capable of. However that could still be a problem if she wasn't the only one you were dating at the time.

@moffittjc I can't imagine what would have happened if he had gotten in with that ax. And over here, the police aren't that prompt.

Oh, my goodness. I wonder what his crime was! You were lucky that you didn't him your address. You felt like he was a normal trustworthy person. In 2014 we did two flights and an overland stretch through Europe. We caught a train to Rome and were trying to reach the Euro Camp location. Our paperwork said take a metro train and a bus. We got to the right metro station only we took the wrong exit for the bus. Some gypsy girls came up to us and put a plastic bag on the handle of my son's wheelchair. Then they ran off. Inside the bag were children's clothing. A few days later we were waiting for a metro train and these gypsy girls sat next to us. Police on the other platform ran up to these girls an took them away. In 2012 we bought a long distance bus ticket and two local people tried to mug us. The lady in tourist information office came out to save us. That was in Buenos Aires and later in our trip we chatted to a Swiss traveller that had her backpack stolen while she was at a café counter. I was told keep your possessions close to you.

Something to do with fraud - but I couldn't be sure that was really it. Though from his appearance it could have been a white collar crime.

Well it seemed to be a white collar crime - involving fraud. That's what he told me - and from his appearance (if one can judge by appearances) I believe that would be the kind of crime he would most likely commit.
