Wolves and Cantaloupes

I know you want to know what wolves have to do with cantaloupes? Well as strange as it might seem there is a connection. That delicious orangey colored cantaloupe relates to “singing wolves”. Cantare in Latin means to sing and lupus means wolf. The first cantaloupes were grown in the Middle Ages in Italy in a region outside of Rome known as Cantalupo. It was so named for the many wolves that could be heard all around “singing” in the night. Wouldn't you like to eat some cantaloupe accompanied by wolf singing?

Thanks for that information. Isn't that interesting? We don't have wolves in Australia but we do have dingoes. They are more like a domestic dog.

Has anyone ever kept a dingo as a pet @JudyEv I know someone told me they knew a person who kept a real wolf and the wolf had become domesticated.

@RasmaSandra Yes, there are a few around that have become domesticated. Our good friend had one but it was always a one-person animal.

Funny that when I eat cantaloupes I feel like howling at the moon. I could eat them all day long as they taste amazing at times.

@TheHorse searching online yes, apparently wolves will eat grass, berries, melons and there was even mention of dog food if anyone would give it to them.

@RasmaSandra Interesting. So they're really omnivores.

@TheHorse yes, you could say that. I believe it also surprised the authorities on wolves. Who knew? Like everyone including us, humans, they want variety in their diet.

That's some very interesting information. I do like cantaloupes but never made the association with wolves.

@RasmaSandra Wolves have recently come back to Germany after many, many years. They have 'immigrated' from Poland into the north-east corner of the county.

That’s interesting. We also use ‘kanta’ to mean ‘sing’.

I love cantaloupes and had one not too long ago. Your picture of the black wolf is beautiful. I don't know if I would like to eat one while listening to them sing though.

Ah an interesting lesson. I thought that makes more sense that it's referencing a region, rather than a connection to wolves themselves
