Thinking on economics....

A buddy of mine is looking to escape her spot. She lives closer to the mountains than I do but on this side of the state. I warned her that she'd better have a decent down payment plus watch out for flying airplanes when she is looking for even a junker house. The reasonably priced houses will have a dozen other bidders all crying to get into that place. She answered: No. The housing market is about to crash. By this Fall the prices will be lower and she'll find a place. No problem. My sampling of house prices tells me another story. Guess we'll see....

@thislittlepennyearns That amazes me. That is cheap. Are there jobs in that area? Horrible rocky, sage brush crud land here is at least 5 thousand an acre and you have to pay for the guy to put a well in if you can get water plus electricity etc.

To give an example of how expensive houses are to buy here in New England, United States... a couple of years ago a friend of mine's next door neighbor sold his house for almost half a million dollars, even though the house wasn't that nice or big. And it was also gloomy looking, in my opinion.

@MainerMikeBrown Holy batman! That's just awful. I can't imagine coping. That sounds like Seattle.

Here it is a very poor area and even if a house is cheap most people around here just cannot afford them so when houses are bought it is usually by people from out of state.

@shaggin That sounds sad. Either pay high rent or a mortgage. Its a toss up at times.

For her sake, I hope it goes her way - but these things you never really know (Fall is still a while away!). We bought at a time when prices were low, but so was inventory . . . I heard there were 26 bidders on this house (it's not even big, and not even in the greatest of areas). Now the prices are sky high everywhere. There doesn't seem anywhere (at least here) where someone could say there is no problem getting a house.

@sallypup 500 is very tiny! In my area, the going price for a 1250-1400 foot house is maybe 450-500 thousand average - not even on an acre of property! As we go northbound even just a few blocks up, the prices get even higher!

@much2say What you describe is what I have been dealing with. Even the bitty houses, the 500 foot houses, cost over a hundred thousand.

@much2say Exactly what I am finding is what you describe. We have 200 thousand and when we find such places with a small lot, a dozen other folks want the place, the bid gets driven up to way beyond our budget or reason for that matter. The place that I am going for has about 22 of an acre. That's a little bigger than the average. The house is on a corner so on three sides the nearest neighbor is a street across from us. I love that. We really wanted to be on a half acre at least but that usually means we would not be near a bus line or stores plus the cost.

I know that here in Florida the market is rising slowly but steadily and the market in Connecticut is pretty healthy as well. I tell everyone to buy as quickly as they can our home has almost doubled in price since we bought it almost 5 years ago. The economy is booming I can't imagine why she thinks prices will be lower. We paid $50,000 for it fully furnished but we have a very small lot but about 1200 square feet of living space and a screen porch.

House prices are pretty low here at the moment too - actually the prices aren't too low but the market is depressed.

@jstory07 I totally agree with you and why we did not end up in Western Oregon like we'd intended to.

We had one of our main factories closed down and demolished here, so there are a lot of houses on the market now. They will probably have their prices drop because of a plunge in area jobs. The main benefit to this area is the cost of living. It's really low.

@sallypup Yes, it was actually the lawyers that killed the company. It was that whole mesothelioma thing, because one of the plants had used abestos in its process. Though it only applied to a section, the lawyers squeezed it dry. I think it would be justice if those lawyers were squeezed dry too... Since it couldn't recover, it was shut down. Despite people that wanted to purchase it. It was the only producer of glass blocks for use in architecture for a while. Now glass blocks will have to come from China (who actually stole the designs from that plant) and Taiwan. Before the end, it had acquired new technology to make printable designs on the blocks, and we used them in our fundraiser efforts. Had the plant continued to exist, it would have made a comeback. Here's a link to what we did with those funds:

@OneOfMany That's a tragic modern tale. That park looks like something I'd love to see in person. I live in a mobile home at this point but have enhanced many of its windows with stained glass pieces and a 3-D colored glass heart. Thanks for this link though its a heart breaker.

@OneOfMany That's a sad statement about America in general. When I started looking for a house West side in my state, I considered certain areas cause the housing was cheaper- tons of foreclosures due to lack of jobs. Then I had to figure how far would it be for me to get to medical facilities? I do not have the driving stamina that I did a few years ago. I wish your area better days.
