Should I act or just ignore it?

Since I've moved into my new place I have heard my upstairs neighbors fighting many times. The man of the house definitely has anger issues and drops the "F" bomb constantly and he never seems to shut up. I hear banging and crashing and sometimes what sounds like a woman screaming. I know that there are children in the household. I have always been a "keep to myself" person and remain out of others business, but this gets annoying for me and sometimes frightening when I hear the yelling and crashing. Should I call the authorities to investigate a possible domestic violence or just leave well enough alone?

Yes, yes you should. if you hear screaming you should contact for a wellness check to the police because if it is domestic violence, you could be saving a life. Domestic violence should never be ignored.

If I knew there was no way they'd find out it was me I'd call the authorities if it sounds really bad and it's constant! I usually try to keep myself to myself but I'd hate to think of someone getting battered or killed! It could just be they like an argument but at least if the authorities turn up they might calm down and you might get some peace!

@Starmaiden Just call the police but do it anonymously! Better to call while it's going on so the police can hear it for themselves when they arrive! I feel for you having to put up with listening to it all the time... We had a couple in our block who fought like cat and dog when they were drunk. They were as bad as each other but they made me dread spending a night at home alone!

Thats hard because you dont want them to know you called 911. But if you are afraid someone is getting hurt you should.

I would definitely start audio-taping the incidents and call the police and whoever owns the building @Starmaiden .

@Starmaiden I'm one of those brave types. More than once I went to someone's door banging on it when they had their music up too high and told them to turn it down or in 5 minutes the police would be next at the door. It worked every time.

@nanette64 I have done that too, but this is a bit different. Getting involved in something that doesnt affect me personally is another matter altogether. I would definitely call the police if I heard gunshots.

Id feel like such a spy. I hate thought of invading someone's privacy. But then, it intrudes upon mine.

Dont go to the authorities...I think that is not the better idea.It will create more problems between them.it will affect the children. So you can talk to the lady first,Then you can take your decision. Some people are so mad everytime because of their nature.!!

I would do something, mabey not put yourself at risk. But at least start the process of dealing with that. Plus you dont want to live like that or with that around you.

It's a difficult one. My sister has the same problems with people who live in the same block of flats. She wonders whether she should report them. I think I would probably do something as at least someone can see if everything is ok and they don't need to know it was you.

I think you need to report it. It is considered a public disturbance issue. Aside from having a domestic violence issue.

For me, you may talk to the landlord/lady and address the issue. That way, the landlord will be able to find a way to solve the problem and maybe do something about it like reporting it to the police.
