Took a ferry boat yesterday and visited another city they call the City of Smile. Didn't really expect much from that city but got really surprised! City isn't that big. Went all over that city the whole day yesterday. Every time I took a taxi, the driver would greet me 'good morning' and 'good afternoon!' A really good sign. Then I went to this bicycle shop, an authorised reseller of Specialized, and people there were friendly too, but they already know me so that's not really surprising. But what caught my attention was this tall handsome guy, in a business suit. Typical me? No. I don't usually notice such guys. But why this guy in particular? Said my goodbyes to the people in the shop, pushed the door open, and then this tall handsome guy who just got out of his BMW car suddenly rushed to the door to hold it open for me! Now that's something that really caught my attention. With how the world is today, and how the feminist are, that act has become a rarity. And I was just so grateful that this one guy made that gentlemanly act that I really appreciate. Do you, guys, still do the same? To women, do you still see this act from guys especially the younger generation?

My son, who was visiting us from New York City this weekend, opened every door for me, including our car door. He learned that from my husband.

I would expect that from my son. My cousins are the same with their parents. It's hard to expect that from a stranger.

I always hold doors open for women, it was how I was raised. I was taught that it was the courteous thing to do. Some women get upset or offended though when a man holds a door open for her. I don't do it because I think women are inferior, I do it out of respect.

That's why older guys are the nicest. I said older right? Not old. But young guys these days? I can't seem to see young men doing anything for women. Perhaps it was how they were raised.

@toniganzon I'm glad you clarified that I'm not old! haha And us older guys have so many advantages over the younger dudes; we know how to take care of the ladies!

The younger generation can be polite but often does not know how to hold a door to a woman. Basically an accompanied woman should never open any door. If you follow the French etiquette, in a public place the man enters first to make sure that the place is secure, and holds the door to the woman. In a private place, the man holds the door to the woman who enters first. For a car he opens the door to the woman. And an etiquette guessing game : why a woman should precede a man when climbing up a stair, and a man should precede a woman when climbing down a stair ?

Just in case she might fall a man would be there to catch her when climbing up, or hold her back when going down?

I can still some young generation who do that. Maybe because I am old looking already though. Wow, a handsome man doing that for a lady, that is such a rarity indeed.

Yes, indeed. Younger men here ignore women unless the woman is one they pursue. They don't care about older people. In fact they don't give up their seats. In fact when I was waiting for the boat, there was this man I started at because he was seated and his bag is on a chair while other people, young kids, old people, and women were standing up coz they're no seat left. I stared at him and at his bag and he just started back at me. What an awful man.

@SIMPLYD Oh yes and sometimes, they make The complaints of the feminists as an excuse. Sometimes I would hear men talking to each other saying, "they want equality, now why would we give our seats up?" Stupid men.

@toniganzon Yes, I also encountered one like that. I told him, the seat is for seating. He removed it from the seat. It is disappointing that some men are like this. I think it reflects their bad upbringing.

I have gotten yelled at for holding a door open before, but I still do. Every now and then, you'll hit a feminist who declares that she's not weak and can open a door by herself. However, I sometimes hold doors open for other men, and they don't complain. XD

Exactly why some men stopped doing that as feminist can't seem to see that it's just an act of kindness and not showing them they're weak. I think it's extreme to think that way. Don't ever stop doing what you enjoy. I think I have tried opening a door for a man, a frail old man.

@toniganzon Well, they are an extreme lot! Too much girl power in their veins to recognize kindness. :P I'm just being considerate. It takes less effort to hold a door open than to open it.

Glad you had a good time at the city =) It is such a gentleman when men open the door of course! But I will hold for men/women sometimes too, if I'm near and someones approaching me, I find it rude to just have the door shut in their face.

Just a few hours ago, I gave up a seat for a man and moved to another seat available. I was at the charging port next to my son at Honda's customer lounge while I wait for the car's change oil. A man came in and charged his phone. I'm a sensible person and gave my seat to him coz I wasn't charging anyway. He said thank you and I just smiled back.

right. That's why it came such a surprise to me as well. Most of the handsome guys would turn our to be conceited and a snob. I was looking shabby when that happened and I would never get anyone's attention looking like that, so I believed that he was really such a man with a gentle heart. everything that topffer described is what i saw and how things were when we were growing up. i still see it sometimes, but not all the time. i open doors and leave them open for anyone (regardless of age and gender) if i'm ahead of them, or if their hands are occupied, or if they have a companion. i've also seen females give up their seats for older people, treating them as if they're their parents or grandparents. however, i don't think i've ever witnessed or heard of females here smirking at or dismissing males for helping them.
