Do you ever have a friend or relative accompany you in the doctor's office? I never do but recently I went to the doctor's office to get results of a test I was concerned about. I thought I should ask my husband to come in with me just in case the results were bad. Thankfully they weren't bad but there were questions to be asked and answered. He grilled the poor doctor so much that I thought next time you stay in the waiting room. Of course he asked questions that I probably wouldn't think of and as a result got a lot more information so it was good to have him there in that regard. Do you often visit your doctor alone or with someone else? Is it a good idea under certain circumstances?

I don't have anyone to take with me but I don't need anyone yet. My doctor is very informative and I ask a lot of questions. Your husband is showing how much he loves you when he grills the doctor!! You are very blessed to have a mate like that. I have gone with other people to the doctor, though, and asked questions they were too timid to ask or didn't have the knowledge to ask. One lady could not understand what he was telling her so I told her in plain language what he said. She would have make mistakes with her medication had I not been there to explain. These people are not stupid, they are just unfamiliar with medicine and in some instances have been very sheltered. It's not the doctors' faults, either, because if he/she asked them if they understand they will say they do even if they don't because doctors, to them, are scary authority figures. I'm glad you didn't get bad news!

Thanks. I always accompany my mom in the doctor's office and she would not have it any other way

I always visit the doctor alone, but when my girlfriend goes to the doctor, she always wants me there by her side (she doesn't like doctor visits). I told her I would be happy to be there by her side for every possible doctor appointment she has, with the exception of her gynecology exams. I told her she was on her own for those visits! lol

It wasn't so long ago that men were not allowed in the birth room so I can see why a Gynecology exam would be where you draw the line. Don't think I would want my husband there either. We have always done our appointments separately but since we are now both at home he is my driver but he still goes to his alone.

@Freelanzer I was in the delivery room for the birth of both of my children. Even recorded both births on video! I certainly wouldn't want to record video of my girlfriend getting her hoo-ha examined! LOL

I always go alone for the very reasons you state, Other people can be embarrassing even if their heart is in the right place.

@Freelanzer When my son was around 10 I had to take him to the doctor. The doctor we saw had a foreign name which is also a rude word in English and she had an identity card hanging round her neck so he could read it. He was hysterical with laughter .. I've never been so embarrassed and couldn't get out of there quick enough

I think it is an excellent idea. I can never think of the questions I want to ask when I get there but I think an 'outsider' isn't so involved with what is happening. If I expected a bad outcome I'd be taking my husband along. He is good value in a situation like this although I'd probably be squirming a bit too. He is very quick-thinking and won't be fobbed off by an ill-considered answer.

It was good to have him there even though I kind of grimaced each time he asked another question. But the doctor seemed not to mind

@Freelanzer Some doctors I'm sure are pleased when a patient actually takes an interest in their own health and asks sensible questions - and it gives them a chance to air their knowledge.

My mom normally stays in the waiting room unless it is me doing blood tests, I don't mind going in alone, but normally we have to do it very early and I might not be coherent enough for it and she helps haha

@Freelanzer I understand that. I have seen doctors my entire life. I was never scared even as a kid. The only reason my mom came in with me when i was a kid because I did have a doctor that was arrested because he was a child molester. So yeah haha

I would rather go to the doctor alone. A few times my husband went with me, he was like an immature child.

I used to go on my own but now that we are both at home he is my driver. No problem as long as he stays in the waiting room.

only when it's a procedure where they won't do it without a ride home. i hate waiting rooms, and i wouldn't want anyone else to have to sit and be bored if not needed.

You don't have to be sick to get a medical check up. It is recommended you have one yearly as if there is a problem they can catch it early before it is too late.

I always write down my questions before I see the physician. So it can't happen that I return home and remember questions I've forgotten to ask. I've also gone together with my husband which was a good idea.

@Freelanzer Well, I take my notes with me and tell the doctor that I've written down my questions in order not to forget them. No doctor has complained yet. On the contrary.

Good idea to write it down and I have done that sometimes but forget it once I get in the doctor's office.

I always go alone except for one examination (I feel bad after that, I need a friend to feel safe). But my friend always stays in the waiting room. I'd like to do it on my own.
