Retirement age at 60, is it the same in other countries?

At 60 we can retire from work but forced retirement is 65 yeard old. How i wish the bill for retirement at age 55 will be passed. That can help employees to enjoy their benefits and the remaining years of their lives while they are able to. And it is also good for younger generation they can work or fill in those positons that will be vacated. What are your thoughts on this?

It was at 60 many years ago, now the retirement age for men is 67 and 66 for women and they plan to make people work more, surely not less.

@chavezrmc In most European countries is now 65 and up for men, some are still 60 for women, but the age is increasing in all countries and women equalized to men.

In my country, if you feel you have saved enough to retire, you can retire at any age, but the legal age of retirement is 65. No one is forced to work beyond the age of 65 , although some people choose to semi retire and hold a part time job/hobby after the age of 65.

@Starmaiden We also can retire at any age, but the Government only starts to pay your pension when you reach the "legal retirement age": 66 for the women, 67 for men. If you have savings, you can retire when you like, you will get less from the Government, because every year counts.

@LadyDuck People should receive their full pensions at 66/67 regardless of the amount in their RRSPs. That's my opinion. :-)

Here in the US you can start claining SS from retirment at age 62. If you are lucky some companies offer chance for retirement early. Many thouh need other sources for income so many cojtinue to work at least part time even intp their 70s and 9lder.

@KrauseHome i guess most countries adopt nearly same laws on retirement age. But of course we can always go work again after getting our benefits. At least we can have the chance to use it for anything that can help us maybe busines, or even holidays.

It has been increased in the UK and is still rising. For men and women it is 65 now although I just about made 60 before they started to raise it. My sister is 3 years younger than me but she has to work until 65.

@sprite1950 It's okay to work as long as you can. It's still a choice of the person. Others want to retire early so they can get their benefits. They want to start a business or help their children start one. There's always a purpose.

@chavezrmc I couldn't wait to retire although as luck would have it I had to take on custody of my granddaughter on my 60th birthday so I wasn't quite as free as I thought I would be.

I am actually having mixed emotions about that bill. I do not really want to retire at 55, given that I am working. If our country is able to sustain a good life for those who are retiring at 55, then do so but if you will think about it, even at age 60, the seniors are still striving to get a decent life. There are seniors who are still working when they shouldnt be. Just a thought.

@mlgen1037 It's just an optional retirement at 55. you can still go on working till age 60. More retirees, more jobs to the unemployed

I am not so sure about it now as it seems we will get retired later than before. I think basically women will be retired after 55 years old or 60? And men will be retired at 60 or 65? Anyway, the retirement age will be older and this is the trend.

In our retirement system it is the working people who are paying for the pensions of the retired ones. As the age of the population increases, people have to retire later, or there would be not enough working people to pay for them. The legal age was 60 in 1945, it is actually 62, and will be probably more in a few years. However it is possible to retire at 56 in some cases, but you do not usually get a full pension. Forced retirement is at 70 in my country.

@chavezrmc Everybody pays for social security. There are different schemes of social security (students, farmers, etc) but public servants are at the same general scheme than most of employees. The only difference in charges is that a public servant does not pay for unemployment as he cannot be fired.

@aureliah As long as they want to work is okay. But when we say retirement, that is when we can receive what is due to us for the past years of our service. It's still our money and the employer who contribute for that benefit.

@chavezrmc here you can collect some benefits at 62, a little more if you do it at 65. They try to encourage people to wait for 70 with better packages but its mostly an attempt to save money in the government hope people die before they start claiming. Many here retire but still work

@chavezrmc And I hope there's no discrimination about the age because some companies don't hire oldies so if ever they're gonna pass the law lowering down the retirement age they might hire young people so they can serve the company for longer years.

Forced retirement. Do you think thats good or bad? Here you can collect some social security benefits at 62 and i believe the full benefits at 67. But there is no forced retirement.

Here in Australia there is no legal forced retirement age. Some companies have mandatory retirement at 65, but as a general rule you can keep working as long as you want to and are able to. At present the age to receive the Age Pension is 65, but it is gradually being raised to 70. Of course, if you have the money to do so, you can retire at any age you want.

@lynnief That is sad that the pension can be given only when you reach 65. Here in PH we can have our pension when we reach 60 years of age that is if we want to retire. But yes we can go on working till 65. Others retire early so they can start a new business, others go for vacation or holidays. But they can still work in private companies if they can find one that accept them. But usually most retirees are already sickly if not they take maintenance meds already. So retirement fees goes to medical expenses at the most. That is why there are proposed bill to lower the retirement age in that way, retirees can still enjoy what benefits they can get while still young able to do so.
