Finally! (Well, Almost!)

I got that out-of-print fiction finally! (No, not the one I got a refund two weeks ago from a rogue online bookseller.) See, about two years ago, I saw a paperback from one of my favorite authors. This writer was born in the early 20th century and might have gone to heaven ages ago! But while I was choosing more books for that specific order, the price of that certain paperback suddenly jumped up from US$ 5 to about US$ 30. I dropped the whole lot that time of course. I have been keeping an eye on that specific paperback since (in a wishful way) but have no intention whatsoever to pay that cutthroat asking price. Today, its price for some reason, going down to about US$ 7. I promptly bought & paid for it, but let hope everything is smooth sailing from now especially with the sending. Do you only buy things when the prices are right for you (that is, set a strict budget for your shopping)? Have you ever been a compulsive buyer?

I used to be a bit compulsive about purchasing some things but I'm much better now.

@YrNemo I bought too many horse ornaments over the years and would now like to get rid of some of them.

@JudyEv Some collectors would love to pay lots for them. Yours are very beautiful. (I saw them on the dresser.)

I think sometimes I was obsessed by some naughty spirits re: shopping! Every time (in the past) when I believed myself had finished with buying junks from ebay or online stores, a few weeks later, I would see myself searching for items... (and spent hundreds of dollars soon afterwards getting something I would not normally buy!)

It is always a good feeling getting things we want so much at a bargain price, right?

So great you were able to get it at a reasonable price. No point making someone richer.

No way! My books and my favorite authors are my secrets. If I let you know, and you decided to compete for those books, I would be in big trouble...

Certain states (or islands) in the US, the delivery is not for free from what I understand. Most of the times the cost of the item is OK, but the delivery cost is overboard.

Sometimes the sales do tempt me a bit, but one has to be careful with the budget.

Would you be tempted to get the item on the inflated price if you are so keen?

I must be honest here I buy what I need and not what I want. So when it is my need how can I look at the price tag?

@YrNemo If something is too expensive, no matter how I like, I do not buy.

@YrNemo Buying things because they're cheap is definitely not a sign of higher intelligence if I may say so.

@MALUSE I agree with you there. We hate it when those people after buying so, decided to sell those back to us at the normal price.

I like buying things (which I like to own/possess) when they are at a good price (affordable to me). I have acquaintances who often bought things they didn't even need, only because the items were so cheap.

Have to admit, sometimes I could be very impulsive (especially if I was about to buy things as gifts for others).

Oh yes, I am like that too. Sometimes things are just out of my budget and no matter how much I may want whatever it is - it's too expensive. Happy you got the book

@YrNemo That was a good way to rationalize it... and if you didn't like it, you could always re-sell it :-)

@FayeHazel I am chicken re: selling anything. I often just give things away, to save myself from having grey hair and heart attack (plus heartburns etc) .

I was convincing myself of giving up the idea of try getting that book. I told myself this way, 'If the book was that great, it would have been reprinted over and over. Since it was not, the book must be an awful read!' Oh well, I paid for it at the price I was OK with, and if the book turned out to be bad, I won't kick myself.

A thing is only worth what we're willing to pay for it. For me it isn't so much the budget, as whether I actually think it's worth me paying that amount. I have a favourite author with lots of out-of-print titles, too. :)

We think the same way. There were books from some authors whom I like very much, and to own the few last copies of the collection (all were out of print), I had to pay a reasonable amount just to get them (in order to read them). But I refuse to pay the cutthroat price. (I have a few more to collect. I am debating with myself if I should get them or not. They might turn out to be awful for all I know.)

To me, it is a matter of principle, a book should only cost that much and no more. If the price suddenly jumps up, then I won't pay, that's it. (I am lucky that the price comes down .)
