Spelling malfunction

I have always been good at spelling but recently I have to keep checking to see if a word I have written is correct. Now it could be that I am being influenced by the fact that English spelling is different to American/English and most online sites seem to prefer American/English. Do you ever look at a word you have written and question whether you have spelt it correctly? I seem to be constantly checking these days. Image from Pixabay

Why don't you install a spell check? It's free. Yet, you have to check what the spell check suggests. Sometimes it's nonsense. You can decide which English you want to use. I only British English. You are a Brit. Why would you use American English?

I don't but I notice that recently I feel the need to keep checking words that I have always been able to spell. I thought it was maybe because I'm reading American English but I think it's more to do with age and forgetfulness

@sprite1950 - It's been happening to me too. I don't think it has anything to do with being from the UK or the USA. I'm not sure what it is. I blame texting and RAP song lyrics! (I don't know what's causing it but I have to blame something. I used to win spelling bees when I was a kid! Something is screwy in my brain. )

@cmoneyspinner I think it's probably got more to do with age and just generally forgetting.

Spell check helps but it is a bit distracting to keep seeing red lines under words

@sprite1950 , Agreed but that gives us a warning that the word needs to be checked which we can always get it corrected after the completion of the typing! I feel this is a great help to me! Thanks!

I sometimes wonder if people think I am spelling words wrongly when they see the way I spell though. The American way is easier.

Yes there are words and I find it funny why they are misspelled wrong here.

I studied British English in school and it happens that the spell checker underlines words that are correctly written in English, but they are not in American. Internet was born in the United States, most sites are from the United States, this is the reason why you mainly see American English.

Sometimes, I will read something someone wrote and I will think they made a typo and then I realize that they are not writing in American English. For example, you wrote the past tense of spell as spelt rather than spelled. The only "spelt" word I know in American English is a wheat grain. So I guess you are using a different English here.

@sprite1950 From what I know, and after Googling, not in American English. But in other types of English they are.

I honestly love British English a lot more. I grew up reading British English books so teachers would get mad at me when I spelled words that way instead of American. And I'm always like, you should be happy I spelled the word correctly at all! Haha

I suppose if you live in the US they would want you to spell that way. I remember my daughter saying she got told off for using the word "gotten" as we don't use it over here.

@sprite1950 I would and still write colour and to-morrow. I get gitty if I can use Fortnight haha but oh well. I misspell things a lot anyway, being dyslexic I have no idea if I am speaking English, American or Gibberish. But let's be honest, most American is pretty much gibberish haha!

Spelling has always been my strong suit and also a pet peeve if people misspell words. I do have to check sometimes to see if I have spelled a word correctly especially if it is a word that I don't use often or has some weird spelling. Thankfully, we have spell check and online dictionaries.

@sprite1950 Right. It's like the whole world will judge you if you make a mistake here. I try not to think about what other people might think of me because then I won't want to write anything.

I am/was a good speller (but I'm not modest ) but I find myself checking more and more. In my case I'm sure it's just old age creeping in.

@sprite1950 I 'lose' words too now. With luck they'll come back to me later which is okay if I'm writing something but of no use in a conversational sense. It's very frustrating.
