Could you survive if you couldn't get any food for a while? Do you know that you might have some nutritious free food very close to home? What do you know about edible weeds? Please do not eat any plant that you are not absolutely sure that it is edible. Did you know that grass is edible and so are dandelions? What edible weed do you eat?
Wild edibles are free and nutritious. Common Weeds And Wild Edibles Of The World is a how-to film about foraging. It will teach you how to safely and sustain...

Most flowers are also edible and yes there are numerous weeds that grow in my garden that I know are edible and can be used to medicinally. However, there is enough to eat right now so I don't need to eat them

Yes, we have no food problem at this time. Still, it is good to know because we do not know what may happen in the future.

Just be careful not to eat any plants that someone has sprayed with a pesticide or herbicide, both are dangerous for your health.

Yes, we should be careful of that. I grow my own weeds. I have dandelions, chickweed and plantains growing in pots right now inside my apartment.

A Pot of Henbit
Let's see. I have eaten dandelions, mallows, henbit, miners lettuce, sow thistle, and some I can't think of right now. I also enjoy eating flowers like hollyhocks, calendula, roses, and nasturtiums. I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting, but I don't think I will starve if these plants are around. The photo shows a pot of henbit. I think I might have made a post about it here.

You seem very knowledgeable. I also enjoy eating edible flowers. I also see a dandelion in your pot. That must have been a bonus. Do you live in a house or in an apartment?

@1hopefulman We are living in a house, but I grow most edibles in pots if I can't fit them in the front flower beds. We have thirteen acres at our other house, but we don't sleep there anymore and the property is hard for me to manage.

I know that dandelions flowers are edible and also the young leaves are, they are not the only "weeds" that are edible. It is important to know the plants before trying, some are poisonous. I also love wild mushrooms, I am very careful with them.

Yes, with anything that goes into our mouths we need to be careful as there are plants that can kill us. I am getting good with weeds. I even grow them on my balcony in the summer and some are growing inside my apartment in pots. I love nature. When it comes to mushrooms, I buy them, as I have very little knowledge of them. However, in the city we may see one or two here and there but I'm not even touching them.

@1hopefulman There are only two varieties of mushrooms that I pick up in the wild. I am sure of those two.

My parents used to serve dandelion greens to us kids all the time. I thought they were gross, but they are nutritious. I prefer wild berries. Blackberries, raspberries, wild blueberries, strawberries and other edible wild berries and fruit.

I have grown to like eating them uncooked but I don't eat a lot, just a few leaves at a time as they are very bitter.

We're too young to have this knowledge. The grown-ups who lived during WW2 and the post-war period certainly knew about this. I remember a bit from my early childhood years. You can make soup from nettles and eat the leaves of yarrow on a slice of bread with butter. You can slice an apple, let the peelings dry and make tea with them. You can also make tea from the fruits of linden trees. The problem is only that nowadays nearly everything is contaminated with fertilisers. This was not the case in the post-war years.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! That is true! We have grown up with getting our food from stores and may have little knowledge of wild plants. We have to make sure that we don't eat any plant that is full of pesticides but are fertilizer's also toxic?

Eating anything with pesticides is not a good idea. Adding edible flowers to salads make the salad very colorful. Did you know that you can eat roses?

@just4him What some people do is that they put them in a blender with some fruit like bananas and then they are much more palatable or make them an ingredient in a salad. Then there are people like me that actually enjoy the bitter taste and find the flowers of the dandelion sweet.
