What an Exciting Day! California Politics and Using the Smartphone

Sunset from the Atascadero Lake Park Pavilion Parking Lot

The morning was pretty dull, as I was still not feeling well and was very tired. I knew I'd really have to watch what I eat, and the diet I was supposed to follow today was the opposite of what I normally eat. So I was starving on tea, bananas, apple juice and cheese during the morning. I don't keep white bread in the house. Moved up to a hard-boiled egg and some canned chicken noodle soup for lunch. We watched the West Virginia Republican Primary Debate on Fox before we had to head to the Lake Park Pavilion in Atascadero to see the debate between the Republican candidates for governor in California, John Cox and Travis Allen. It was a noisy affair. They really didn't need microphones, but they had them. That room echoed, and my husband had a headache from it. Most debates are more subdued. This one was more like a pep rally with both candidates trying to elicit reactions and cheers from the audience. What's interesting is that the platforms seemed identical, and only the style and experience differed. Both could really project their voices. The big question for me was which could win the general election. John Cox, the businessman, seems to be backed by the party money. He is older and a bit more subdued. Or maybe he was just tired. I think they debated in Fresno the night before. Travis Allen is the only one who was born and grew up in California and has actually won political office. Both claim to be the real conservatives and Trump supporters. Each indicated the other wasn't quite up front about past activities and where their campaign money came from. I still haven't decided whom to support. The audience seemed to be more supportive of Travis Allen. He seemed to connect with the audience in a way that Cox didn't. I think younger voters would be more likely to vote for him. Those over forty might connect more with Cox, though I didn't. Now comes the research to see which is closest to being the most honest. One nice thing about the event for me was the refreshments. They served sandwiches that I could eat. I was allowed to eat white bread, cheese, and poultry. So I devoured three little turkey sandwiches with cheese and finally got some real solid food. So I feel much stronger tonight than I did early in the day. I even got brave and ate two chocolate chip cookies with white flour and no nuts. So far I have not had any ill effects. Tomorrow will tell the tale When the event let out, the sun was just setting. I had not brought my camera, but I wanted that sunset. So I borrowed my husband's smartphone and took some photos. I figured I'd play with the phone a bit when I got home so I could find a way to share them. You can see one of them above. I'll save the story of my adventures trying to get it posted on another day. I need to go to bed now. I hope I can get some real writing done tomorrow, but somehow my plans never seem to get executed. Did your day go as planned? Are you following California politics? Do you have opinions about it you want to share?

i think cox has a better chance of beating the dem for governor. just on the fact that older voters vote in higher numbers than younger voters.

That might be true. Also, he will have the support of the state party and, thus, their money. Usually the one the state party supports is the one they put in to make sure a true conservative doesn't get elected. If a conservative that conservatives really like runs, the party will use their money to run someone they can control better to run against him. It happens every time.

@bagarad - right now they should be thinking about getting the win by pointing out all that has gone wrong in the state with moonbeams' governship. they need to run against the democratic policies, phylosophy and plans. if the message rings truthfully and humble with the people, you wont need a lot of money.

@Plethos They are both doing that. Both want to reform welfare. Both want to secure the border and get rid of sanctuary cities. Both want to attack the opioid epidemic. Both want to fix roads and get rid of the bridge to nowhere, both want to reform education, and both want to build more water storage. Both say they will cut taxes and manage the state's money better. They differ in the way they express themselves and in their experience and length of residence in California. I took literature from both. I didn't find the debate I saw on YouTube, but here's a link to the page of the other debates between John Cox and Travis Allen, as well as other campaign videos they have made:

That's a lovely photo. I love the light coming through the tree leaves and making nice patterns.

You can see, then, why I couldn't let this sunset escape and had to learn to use my husband's phone to take a photo. A friend happened to be passing by and helped me figure it out, even though she uses an iPhone.

@JudyEv I agree. But it took some research at home to get it onto my computer.

I live in NC and I am following the politics here. Note to self... I need to change my voting address for the elections. The only thing I have seen about California politics is the state and 16 other states are suing the Trump Administration over the new EPA rules.

@bagarad Keith (husband) said that EPA laws in California are very strict. I guess Trump proposes to let some of those laws lax.

@Shellyann36 Some of them are ridiculous. They are there to conform to Agenda 21. They are there to satisfy extreme environmentalists. Most of us want clean air and pure water, but California goes way beyond that to help politicians line their pockets. I was at a County Board meeting one day when they were discussion a proposed county law. One of the companies that did energy audits on homes was presenting the case for the law that no one should be allowed to sell a home until they had an energy audit. The audits cost around $400. The homeowner would be required to have the audit to give to a prospective purchaser. It was not required that the homeowner fix any problems before the sale -- only that he get the audit done. A lot of people spoke against it -- many more were opposed than supported. When it looked as though there were more against than for the law, the presented got up and practically begged. She told the board they could use some regulatory support. It made me wonder who might be putting silver in whose palm. In other words, the company wanted the board to make the regulation to provide the company with coerced customers who would not otherwise opt to get this audit. The board made the regulation.

given my thoughts on Trump, my support would go to the democratic candidates though I'm not in the US

If you had to live here under complete Democrat rule you might think differently. Do you have the homeless camped along your major highways in tents? Are violent gang members being protected by your cities?

@arthurchappell I don't know where you're getting your news, but no one has found such evidence of collusion thus far after over a year of investigation. The ones whose lies have been confirmed are those in the FBI who were breaking many laws to get that investigation started. Trump is no angel, but he's at least kept his bad behavior out of the Oval Office, unlike Bill Clinton and Clinton's lies were even told under oath. They are both sinners. As for the issues, especially homelessness, they are complex. I don't think anyone has easy answers. Brown would rather spend state money on building a high speed rail system in the middle of nowhere than on doing something to help the mentally ill, many of whom are among those homeless. But I'm too tired to keep talking politics. It's actually not my favorite subject. And I've a lot more comments to respond to before bedtime.

A good meeting in a whole, especially because you had the occasion to eat solid food and now you feel better. This is a nice photo. Atascadero rings a bell in my memory, I am sure we have passed from this city and I think to remember it's a nice one. May be it has been when we went from Santa Barbara to San Simeon.

@bagarad We went the Highway 1 on the way back to Los Angeles. I am sure we passed through Atascadero and Paso Robles, we certainly passed the Templeton house, we wanted to have a look at the vineyards.

You were going to bed when I was starting my day. Though I have had a nap today. Not being from California, the obvious answer is no, I'm not following California politics. I'm glad you're feeling better after having some thing more to eat. Your picture is beautiful!

I'm waiting for the moving van to arrive with my furniture... 75 minutes more. In the meantime I need to empty the refrigerator so it can be moved to the garage and the new one placed in the kitchen...maybe I should get busy.

It's a slam dunk Gavin Newsom will be governor regardless of party or whomever challenges him within his own party.

You are probably right, but that doesn't mean we will stop fighting for reform in our party or for getting our closed primaries back.
