I Got My Life Back

Canada

I saw my surgeon and he was impressed with my new knee. The knee is healed and I can move it like I always did before the surgery without the pain. Xrays were taken and in the end I was given my life back. I can drive again, I can go to the YMCA and swim and use their track for walking. Using the machines at the Y are not allowed until a couple of months but that is ok. I love Water Aerobics. What I didn't think about was the exercises are even harder than before, working to get the muscles in the back of my leg after being damaged with the surgery and also just being lazy. Wow yesterday the calf muscle went crazy with the new exercises being much harder than before the knee healed. I had to get out the cane again after working on the exercises. I know its just a small hitch in my recovery and I also know its going to hurt until I train it to be strong again. So I'm thinking its going to take another month to train my muscles to strengthen and do what I want them to do. I exercise daily up to 5 times. That's a good thing even if it hurts. Thankfully my husband was a coach forever and he knows all the muscles so he advises me which to leave alone for a day and which one will help. He watches and helps me with the exercises. I'm a lucky woman. Are you putting off surgery and hurting daily? After a couple of months you could feel great. Good Luck! The photo is a sunk ship seen from the QEW (our highway). I just found this video about it:

Excellent news for you! I am starting to have some pain in my left knee but also seems to have some sciatic nerve pain in the same leg. I certainly do not want knee surgery.

I wouldn't want knee surgery either, knees take so long to heal.

I am so glad it worked for you @PainsOnSlate I wouldn't dare give it a try with the kind of doctors around here.

@BelleStarr You will know when to do it, when your pain send you to the doctor...My husband knew how much i didn't like the first " new knee, and suggested a brace to hold my knee together so I could walk without pain, I said no, I need the surgery and because I've been through it before we know what needs to be done this time. My physio first time was worthless and it took me 4 months to recover. This time we made sure we had a good physio and I wanted it to feel great in less than 3 months. I exercise 3 times a day and more when I feel I need it ( last time was once a day) It has been two months and the knee is great and sound with no pain, now we are working on the muscles in the back of the knee that still is a bit touchie..

I'm sorry I waited so long, I was in pain for too long and now its gone...It does take a few months to recover, i am very close to that now. The knee is great, the muscles in the back of my leg are getting a work out daily to make them work properly soon.

So glad it is going well for you. Most people tend to give up after they have their surgeries and it takes them so much longer to recover completely if they recover at all. Kudos to you for sticking with it.

@PainsOnSlate My mother-in-law is in the hospital for the second time within the past 2 months. The first time she was there for almost 3 weeks and then refused to go to a skilled nursing facility after she got out. She is right back in the hospital again because of it. It pays to listen to and do what the doctors advise.

I am normal now, I still do my exercises. and you are right, those who don't do the exercises, lose their mobility.

@PainsOnSlate my FIL had a surgery on his knees and while he is better his did not turn out as well as yours, he still has a lot of issues with them.

@mom210 The most important part of this surgery other than haveing a great surgeon, is the exercises done every day, 3 times a day. I had a knee replacement - they cut out the old knee and gave me a plastic and metal new knee. I had a few weeks with simple exercieses and once the staples were out I visited my physio and she gave us much more to do on a daily basis. I was using a walker for about two weeks, then used a cane for a couple of weeks and then didn't need help, I could walk again and yes it still hurt for a while but it was getting better, know it feels normal ( two months later).

That's wonderful news that you're now free of pain. And well done for continuing with the exercises. Some people don't bother then wonder why they don't get back the full use of their joint.

I'm so happy for you that the worst of this is behind you now. Especially with the turn in our weather. Having passed the ship in Jordan Harbour many times, I watched the video clip. I wasn't aware of the ship's history, its rather rich and unique.

@PainsOnSlate I had no idea that you were that close! If I'm up that way I will make arrangements before I go with you. That would be fun. I want to go to a festival up there this summer where I can pick up a piece of your work.

I saw the ship and actually went on it I think in Port Dalhousie during some event years ago. I was heart broken when it was torched. it looked so cool just hanging around the restaurant and hotel (very near my house - so if you are going by let me know and we can meet for tea...)

@PainsOnSlate Oh, very nice! Yes, a good physiologist working with you singly or in a group setting can really speed recovery! Cutting the recovery time in half is spectacular!

Sometimes you have to just say enough is enough. I knew it was going to make me be home bound for a few months but in the end it was worth it. After two months I was allowed to drive again and get back to the Y to exercise, obviously I don't have to leave home to work so it was an easy decision. And getting the right physio group made what might have been a 4 month event a two month event..

@DaddyEvil my physio was working singly and I loved every minute, she also showed my husband how to do some scary stuff with my knee but I know it helped to make my recovery easy...

I did the same thing looking for the right time. I liked having it in the winter because I usually didn't do much in winter anyway so i had time to heal.

No surgery for me, I only need to keep exercising to get this old body to function properly again. I've been so lazy these past few months but not with the triple digits we'll be getting here. I need to water everything and keep the pots full of water for those poor birds.

If exercising works for you there is no need for surgery. I'm glad I had mine and walking pain free is so worth the time spent recovering. Its warm here now but not too hot to enjoy the weather.
