Hi From the News at Yahoo.com ----------------------------------------------------------- "The Pope said today ... that he supported Turkey's EU bid. That means he elevated Turkey from a second class membership into a first class membership," Cemal Usak, a Turkish Muslim activist, told CNN Turk. "His Regensburg (Germany) speech supported a clash of civilizations but now in today's remarks he apparently backs an alliance of civilizations," said Usak, who is active in interfaith dialogue. Benedict traveled to Turkey with two strikes against him, his well-known opposition to Turkish EU membership and the September speech in Germany that many Muslims said insulted Islam by using a quote that described the religion as violent and irrational. He has denied he sees that link but has not withdrawn his words. Security was heavy for Benedict's first visit to the Muslim world, with sharpshooters on the roof of the arrivals building and troops guarding the airport. About 3,000 police have been posted in the Turkish capital to prevent any protests. More than 100 Islamist nationalists protested against the visit in central Ankara while 50 civil servants briefly held a peaceful protest at the Religious Affairs Directorate, where the Pope was to meet Turkey's top religious official. But the mood was mostly quiet, with few protests and none of the crowds that greet the Pope in Christian countries. Most Turks are Muslims but the state is officially secular. ---------------------------------------------------- There were protests because of his remarks about Turkey joining the EU, and his remarks that he quoted someone in the 14 Century!!!! Personnally..... I am not Catholic, so I dont follow what the Pope does.... However ....... It shows that the two "Mainstream" Religions need further dialogue!!
