I've not exactly made my love of the sport of cycling a secret on here, so it's only natural that this Colorado Springs-based organization would hold a great amount of my interest. USA Cycling oversee's competitive cycling in the United States, acting as the governing body for road, track, mountain biking, BMX, and cyclo-cross disciplines (if you've never seen cyclo-cross, it's like, the coolest thing ever!) The organization works closely with the UCI (the governing body of International Cycling,) The United States Olympic Committee, and COPACI (Confederacion Panamericana Ciclismo, the governing body of competitive cycling in the America's.) USA Cycling's roots date back to 1920, when The Amateur Bicycle League of America was formed, becoming the United States Cycling Federation in 1975. USA Cycling was created in Colorado Springs in 1995, when it then merged with the USCF. Boasting over 61,000 members, USA Cycling's goals are to maintain the success of the United States in international competitive cycling, and to promote and grow competitive cycling here in this country. The organization is made up of 2400 cycling clubs and teams, with nearly 70,000 license holders, which includes competitive cyclists of all ages and abilities in all five disciplines, mechanics, coaches, and officials. It also sponsors 34 Local Associations nationwide, sanctions 2900 events annually, and manages 17 National Championship events. USA Cycling also holds Regional and National Development Camps, International Race Camps, and owns and maintains houses in Belgium, Germany, and Italy, where approximately 200 US cyclists live and train as they acclimate themselves into European race culture. Needless to say, a lot of people work at USA Cycling. Their office building is HUGE! I just drove through the parking lot this morning, and I had forgotten just how big the place is. Keep up the good work, folks! (Photo by me) (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I had no idea! I know there is a race here every summer, they cycle over or up to the Mountain, Mt. Cheaha.

I just looked it up. Sounds pretty brutal. The USA Cycling website says that it's the only US qualifier for the World Gran Fondo Championship in Italy.

Oh, are you a member of this? (Figure skating has a governing body / organizations too - the headquarters of USFSA are in Colorado Springs). That's cool you're near their office - did you go in there too?

No, I don't race, so no need to join or get a license. My girlfriend works a half block away from them, but I've never been in there.

Yes, it's quite an active organization in amateur cycling.
