Do you notice after a time your sponges getting smelly along with losing that fluffy shape and appearing "a bit ratty looking?" I did and with this simple little tip my sponge went from old to a renewed! Just pop that used sponge in the microwave for a couple of minutes and the heat will not only kill the bacteria it will prolong the life of your sponge too. I usually add a little dish detergent on my wet sponge. It creates a soapy water excess, then I can take a paper towel and wipe off the inside of my microwave to keep it nice and clean. This one is so simple but effective. And by stretching out the life of my sponge a bit I get to keep that item off my shopping list (at least for a little while). Have you ever tried this one? I see the questions below and I would like to reply to @alberello75 and @caopaopao. The sponge must be moist, not soaked, use 1/4 cup of water for "scrub" sponges and 1/2 cup for cellulose sponges. Heat 1 minute for "scrub" and two minutes for "cellulose". It works.

Thank you for the tips. I'll try later in home. Yes, I usually feel annoyed with bad smell of sponge and the bad shape. But, is it safe to insert the sponge in the microwave? I mean, don't the sponge get burn?

No, as long as the sponge is wet before inserting into the microwave. It will rid that bad smell. Another tip: pour a capful of white vinegar onto the sponge to kill the smelly bacteria even more....
