No, Metropolis, Illinois was NOT named after the fictional home of Superman. This small river town, across the Ohio River from Paducah, Kentucky, dates back to the 19th century. However, the town’s name and the ‘Man of Steel’ are linked together thanks to the comic book that spawned radio programs, TV shows, cartoons, and movies. If you’re a Superman fan you’re probably there right now, as they have a Superman festival the first weekend in June. If not, it’s worth a stop to see the tributes to the legendary superhero. As pictured above, the Superman statue stands in the town square. Near the statue is a Superman museum (which I didn’t go to). There are face cutouts on the sidewalks where you can have your picture taken with Superman’s body. The town also has a statue of Noel Neill, who played Lois Lane in the 50s TV series (with George Reeves playing Superman). And, with a good dose of humor, they named the street leading to the statue “American Way,” as in “truth, justice, and...”. The museum is very reasonable — $5 admission for adults, kids are free. There’s no charge for access to the statues. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by. Just leave the Kryptonite at home, okay?

Kind of cool but also kind of an eye sore to be in the city center like that with that giant statue. Haha.

True (the ramps and handrails are ADA requirements). To be fair, they also have the REAL Superman honored...a tribute to the fallen soldiers from the county.

The population is about 25,000. Small compared to Louisville, of course. The National Quilt Museum is located there, and it's not too far from the Land Between the Lakes. Pretty part of the state, that's for sure!
