The best way is to try out both D80 and 400D. Which feels better to hold and operate. Which provide better support and aftersales in your area. Both would be good, but I would prefer the Nikon D80 coz i have larger hands.

Nikon D80 vs Canon 400D - The two most popular brands in the market.
The newest model in each brand goes head to head for DSLR beginners!
I personally find the Canon camera range heavy! And with my existing hand strength, holding them for about 15 mins max and my hands will start to tremble. Without the image stabilizer on, none of my shots after 15 mins are clear. Comparing the specifications of the two, their specifications are really similar. Being new to the DSLR realm, the 400D is highly recommended for beginners. The simple to use interface and the new CMOS technologies found in most Canon DSLR, it is the best in the market for DSLR. The D80 on the other hand is still using the CCD technology which many claim is old technology. Seriously, looking at the pictures taken by the two, with the naken eyes, you really cannot tell the difference. What I personally do not like about the Canon DSLRs are the pixel per inch resolution of the camera. I do not know why, but the pixel per inch of the photos taken by their ixus series is 180. But for the DSLRs, the picture resolution is only 72 pixels per inch. The only con I can find in the D80 is the cost. It is about $500 more than the 400D.
